
Shah Leads Pirates' Foursome at Metropolitan

WEST ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Eli Shah (Newtown Square, Pa.) shot a 3-over-par, 73, to lead a four-some of Seton Hall men's golf individuals in round one at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championship at Montclair Golf Club on Monday.

Shah had the top Seton Hall score in round one thanks to a birdie and 14 pars. He enters Tuesday's final round tied for seventh among 72 individual golfers. Rhode Island's Aidan O'Donovan currently leads the field at 3-under-par after 18 holes.

Senior Joshua Lee (Lantana, Texas) had three birdies and seven pars in route to a 5-over-par, 75, on Monday. With 18 holes remaining, he's tied for 13th place.

Sophomore Isaiah Williams (Flemington, N.J.) had two birdies in round one and shot an 8-over-par, 78. He's currently tied for 27th.

One stroke behind Williams is senior Angus O'Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia). He's tied for 35th place after nine pars and a 9-over-par, 79.

THE COURSE:
Founded in 1893, Montclair Golf Club is one of the nation's oldest golf clubs, which began as a single course in the Town of Montclair. By 1899, the first 18-hole course, designed by Tom Bendelow, was established roughly upon the location of the present-day first and second nines.

Montclair Golf Club was one of the founding members of the Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) in 1897. Three MGA presidents—Isaac "Ike" Grainger, Ken Gordon and Jack Kelsey—came from the Club ranks. Grainger also served as President of the United States Golf Association, as did member Charles Littlefield.

Montclair's challenging greens have helped hone the game of many of the region's top players. In the words of Bobby Jones, Montclair is "the longest short course I ever played." It is also one of the few Clubs to have hosted both the Men's and Women's U.S. Amateur Championships.

THE FIELD:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Wagner, the field includes nine other schools:Â Fairfield, FDU, Fordham, Manhattan, Mercyhurst, Rhode Island, Sacred Heart, Saint Peter's and Westchester.

THE FORMAT:
With five Seton Hall golfers playing at the FAU Fall Invitational in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., the Pirates are sending four golfers to compete as individuals to the Metropolitan Championship. The Hall will not compete as a team in this event.
The teams will play 18 holes on Monday beginning with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. A final round will also begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
