
Pirates Close Season with Senior Night Setback

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) collected her team-leading 11th double-double of the season, but the Seton Hall volleyball team fell to Butler, 3-0 (25-27, 22-25, 22-25), on Senior Night Saturday in Walsh Gym.

The loss concludes the 2024 season for Seton Hall. Despite the loss tonight, the Pirates closed the season with wins in four of its final seven matches.

Klungel had team-highs of 28 assists and 14 digs to go with three kills and two blocks. Graduate student Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had a team-high nine kills to go with only three attack errors. Senior Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) had seven kills and seven digs.

SET 1:
The opening set was the closest of the match and featured 12 ties and five lead changes. Neither team had a lead of greater than three points. A kill by Reagan Merk (Huntington Beach, Calif.) put The Hall in set point, 24-22, and forced a Butler timeout. Out of the break, however, the Bulldogs scored three straight to stave off two Seton Hall set points and enter set point themselves. Another kill by Merk tied the set at 25, but Butler scored the last two points. The final point was initially scored for Seton Hall, but was overturned upon review.

Trailing 7-3, The Hall scored seven of the next eight points, and a kill by Klungel put the Pirates on top, 10-8. A kill by Walsh gave Seton Hall a 20-19 lead, but the Bulldogs closed out the set with a 6-2 run. Walsh had five of her seven kills in the second set alone.Â

A kill by Lucas gave The Hall a 19-18 advantage in set three, but Butler scored the next five points to grab a 23-19 lead. Another kill by Lucas cut The Hall's deficit to 23-22, but a Seton Hall service error put Butler in match point. A Bulldogs block gave them a 25-22 set three win.
