Kae Satterfield and Savannah Catalon score 12 points apiece to lead The Hall.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team led at halftime, but shot only 32 percent from the field in the second half and fell at St. John's, 68-57, in Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday.
Â
It's the first time this season that the Pirates have lost despite leading at the half (13-1). St. John's took the lead with an 11-0 run early in the third quarter and never trailed again.
Â
Savannah Catalon (Burleston, Texas) and Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) led the Pirates with 12 points apiece. Satterfield also had a team-high nine rebounds.
Â
THE STORY:
Baines connected on a baseline jumper to tie the score at eight, but then The Hall went without a made field goal for the next 4:57, allowing St. John's to go on a 10-0 run and take an 18-10 lead. A made jumper by Sha'Lynn Hagans (Manassas, Va.) ended the run, but the Pirates trailed 20-12 after 10 minutes.Â
Â
Down 32-27, the Pirates went on an 8-0 run, and a three-pointer by Baines with 3:16 left in the second quarter gave them their first lead of the game. The Hall shot 71 percent in the second quarter and took a 37-34 lead into halftime. Catalon found her offensive touch, scoring nine points on 4-for-6 shooting in the second alone.
Â
Trailing 39-34, St. John's scored five points on one possession due in large part to an intentional foul call. The Red Storm extended their run to 11-0 to take a 45-39 lead and force a Seton Hall timeout with 6:50 left in the third quarter.
Â
In the fourth, an acrobatic layup by Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) cut St. John's lead to 52-51, but St. John's answered with a 10-0 burst to take a 62-51 advantage with only 2:53 left in the game. The Pirates were held scoreless for 5:54 during the Red Storm run in the final quarter. Catalon hit a three-pointer to cut the Pirates' deficit to eight, but they couldn't get closer.
Â
THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, February 17 when it returns to historic Walsh Gymnasium to host BIG EAST rival DePaul. Fans are encouraged to come early and experience the BIG EAST Road Trip fan fest. The contest will be streamed live by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloHoops subscribers with Matt Ambrose and Phil Stern on the call. Tip-time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
