
Tough Shooting Second Half Fells Pirates at Villanova

VILLANOVA, PA. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team shot only 20.8 percent from the floor in the second half as Villanova was able to pull away for a 69-41 victory on Saturday.

The Hall trailed by 10 at the half, but most of the game's metrics including team shooting, rebounding and turnovers remained relatively close at halftime. However, the Wildcats started the third quarter with a 12-0 run and their defense stymied the Pirates in the second half. The Hall was 0-for-13 from three-point range for the game, while Villanova was 7-for-21.

Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) finished with a team-best 10 points. Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) had nine points, four rebounds and two steals.

A jumper by Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) with 2:12 left in the first quarter cut The Hall's deficit to 16-12. Villanova answered with a 9-2 run in the final two minutes, including a layup with a second left that gave the Wildcats a 25-14 lead after the first 10 minutes. Lucy Olsen, the BIG EAST's leading scorer, who scored only 10 points against the Pirates on Jan. 3, had 15 points in the first quarter alone today.

Trailing 27-16, The Hall went on an 8-2 run, and a turnaround jumper by Baines cut the Pirates' deficit to 29-24 with 3:28 to play before halftime. The Wildcats were able to readjust and scored the final five points of the half to take a 34-24 lead at the break.Â

Villanova turned up its defensive effort in the second half, holding the Pirates to only five made field goals over the final 20 minutes. Seton Hall didn't score in the third quarter until Shailyn Pinkney (East Hartford, Conn.) connected on a jumper with 3:46 left. By that time, Villanova had gone on a 12-0 run and extended its lead to a commanding 47-26.

The Pirates were only 2-for-12 in the fourth quarter as Villanova finished off the victory.

THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, February 7 when it travels to No. 11 Connecticut. The contest will be televised by SNY with Allen Bestwick and Meg Culmo on the call. Tip-time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
