Warwick, R.I. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team swept doubles and then won five out of six singles matches to secure a big win at Providence, 6-1, Saturday at TRI West Bay. All eight Pirates who competed won at either singles or doubles on the day.
"The girls have done an excellent job of responding after losses this season and today was no different," said Seton Hall head coach James Enzler. "We kept our composure in the close matches and battled. This was a match that was circled on our schedule after they beat us at home last year, so it was great to see our girls come out with a win."
The Pirates did a great job setting the tone by earning the doubles point. Imogen Brooker and Niamh Campbell picked up their 11th doubles win together (eighth in spring) after dispatching Lauren Carson and Elisa Davalos in the No. 2 position, 6-3. Anastasia Sereda and Aili Hietala clinched doubles victory with their win in the No. 3 position, and Aina Plana Ventosa and Hili Kronzon, teaming together for the first time this season, made it a clean sweep with a win at No. 1.
In singles, Brooker was the first to win as she lost just one game to Mae Abreu at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-0. Sereda gave the Pirates a commanding team lead when she finished a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Camila Barrera Aguirre.
Aina Plana Ventosa then clinched the team victory with a three-set victory over Lauren Carson at No. 3. For Plana Ventosa, it was her 11th straight victory, and she's 11-0 in spring singles.
Arabella Moen continued her hot streak with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Elisa Davalos at No. 6. Moen now has singles victories in five of her last six matches.
Emily O'Donovan finished the strong Pirates performance by battling back from a first-set deficit to beat Vannelie Melendez 3-6, 7-6(0), 6-3 in the No. 4 position.
Seton Hall will play a home match against UC Irvine at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, N.J., Thursday at 2 p.m., and then will play at Marist Friday at 1:30 p.m.
