Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team made swept the doubles point against Marist and earned four singles wins to clinch a 5-2 victory over the Red Foxes Friday at Marist Tennis Pavilion. The Pirates battled through some tough winds to earn their eighth victory of the season.
"Our girls survived a real test today. It was our first match outdoors where the wind was really a factor, " said Seton Hall head coach James Enzler. "The girls knew, win or lose, it was not going to look like pretty tennis. Marist competed extremely hard, I give them a lot of credit. For our girls it was a very well deserved win. Bella and Aina took care of business early on which was great to see. It came down to our freshman who were the last three matches left on court in the end. They probably didn't love it but I liked seeing them have to fight off the pressure of needing one more match win to clinch the match. Really proud of everyone today."
For the second straight match, the Pirates completed a clean sweep of doubles with Anastasia Sereda and Aili Hietala finishing first in the No. 3 position with a 6-2 win over Andriana Zaphiris and Ellen Zureick. Imogen Brooker and Niamh Campbell followed shortly there after with a win at No. 2 to clinch the point, and Aina Plana Ventosa and Hili Kronzon went to a tiebreaker at No. 1 but came out victorious.
Plana Ventosa earned the first singles win rather quickly, dispatching Devon De Sanctis in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 3 position. That's now 12 straight singles victories for Plana Ventosa to open the spring campaign.
Playing at No. 6, Arabella Moen gave the Pirates a commanding 3-0 lead when she finished with a straight sets win over Zaphiris 6-3, 6-2. Marist got one back at No. 4, and things got a little tighter as the final three matches all went to a third set. However, Campbell ensured a Hall victory with her win at No. 5, topping Vihana Shresta 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The icing on the cake came when Brooker defeated Caterina Assi at No. 2, 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-5.
Seton Hall is hosting a pair of matches at the Campus Courts next week, taking on Marquette Friday, April 5, and DePaul Saturday, April 6, both at 1:45 p.m. Friday's match is Senior Day for the Pirates.
