Pirates Hold Off DePaul to Advance, 71-64

The Hall drains a season-high 13 three-pointers and advances to face No. 2 Creighton in the quarterfinals.
UNCASVILLE, CONN. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team drained a season-high 13 three-pointers and held off DePaul, 71-64, to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament, at Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday.

With the victory, The Hall will now play No. 2 seeded Creighton in the BIG EAST quarterfinals on Saturday for a fourth year in a row.Â

The Pirates took the lead midway through the second quarter and never trailed again. They held Anaya Peoples, a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection, to only four points before she fouled out with 7:35 remaining in the game.

Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) had 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) had 16 point on the strength of four made three-pointers. Freshman Savannah Catalon (Burleson, Texas) had 13 points and drew eight fouls. Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) tallied 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

THE STORY:
Leading 10-9, The Hall went on a 7-0 spurt, and a jumper by Satterfield gave it a 17-9 advantage with 4:22 left in the first quarter. However, that's when the Pirates' offense stalled. DePaul held Seton Hall scoreless for the next 7:35, well into the second quarter, and went on a 9-0 run to take the lead.

Seton Hall eventually adapted to the Blue Demon's zone and closed the first half with an 11-2 run. A three-pointer by I'yanna Lops (Stamford, Conn.) with 55 seconds left sent the Pirates into halftime with a 35-24 lead. The Hall was 7-for-14 from downtown in the first half and routed DePaul on the boards, 24-to-13.

With 1:52 left in the third quarter, DePaul cut Seton Hall's lead to three points, 46-43, but on the Pirates' ensuing possession, Catalon hit a three-pointer to boost The Hall's lead back up.Â

With Seton Hall leading 54-46, DePaul's Anaya Peoples fouled out with 7:35 left in the game. The Pirates then went on a 10-3 run to grab their largest lead of the game, 64-49, with 4:23 to go. DePaul made a run late and cut their deficit to six points on three occasions but couldn't get closer.

Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, March 9 when it continues play at the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The No. 7 seeded Pirates will face No. 2 seeded Creighton at 7:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals. The game will be nationally televised by FS2.

- Seton Hall was 24-for-59 (40.7%) from the floor for the game, while DePaul was 25-for-66 (37.9%). The Hall was 13-for-26 (50.0%) from three-point range, while the Blue Demons were 9-for-26 (34.6%).Â
 - Baines had a team-high 17 points and was 3-for-4 from three-point range. She also had seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
 - The Hall out-rebounded DePaul, 43-to-36, but the Blue Demons had a 12-to-10 edge on the offensive glass.
 - Gray finished with 16 points on the strength of 4-for-8 shooting from three-point range.Â
 - Seton Hall was 10-for-15 (66.7%) from the free-throw line, while DePaul was 5-for-13 (38.5%).
 - Catalon had 13 points to go with three rebounds, three assists, two steals and a game-high eight fouls drawn.
 - Seton Hall forced 14 turnovers, while the Blue Demons forced 18. The Hall had a slim edge, 14-to-13 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
 - Satterfield tallied 10 points, a team-best eight rebounds and two assists.
 - The Hall had 21 assists on 24 made field goals.

- With the victory, Seton Hall will now advance to play No. 2 seed Creighton in the BIG EAST quarterfinal round on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
 - Seton Hall improves to 17-13 overall, while DePaul's season comes to an end with a final record of 12-20.
 - The Hall is now 9-24 all-time against DePaul and has won four of the last five contests. This was the first-ever victory for Seton Hall over DePaul in the BIG EAST Tournament (1-4).
 - With 17 points today, Baines surpassed the 1,100-points milestone for her career.
 - Despite becoming a full-time starter only this year, with five assists tonight, Wright moved into a tie for with Leslie Chavis for 15th place on Seton Hall's career list with 279 assists.
 - Wright's single-season assist total is now up to 155. Today, she passed Phyllis Mangina and moved into a tie with Christine Koren for seventh place on Seton Hall's single-season list.
 - With 13 points today, Catalon surpassed the 200-points mark for her career.
 - Seton Hall's 13 made three-pointers are the most in a single-game since making a program-record 19 against Georgetown on Feb. 22, 2022.
 - The Pirates' 21 assists are a season-high.
 - The Hall improves to 28-38 all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament and has won three straight first-round games.
