Xie Leads Pirates in Round 1 at NCAA Regionals
5/13/2024 9:13:00 PM | Men's Golf
RANCHO SANTA FE, CALIF. – Graduate student Wenliang Xie (Burbank, Calif.) shot a 4-over-par, 74, to lead the Seton Hall men's golf team in round one of the 2024 Rancho Santa Fe NCAA Regional on Monday.
Â
The Regional, being played at beautiful "The Farms" Golf Club just outside San Diego, Calif. proved difficult in round one. Xie started off his opening round with birdies on holes two and three, but struggled to finish the front nine, going bogey, bogey, double-bogey on 7, 8 and 9. He was only 2-over on the back nine, however. He's currently tied for 42nd place. Cal's Sampson Zheng is currently the individual leader at 4-under-par.Â
Â
As a team, The Hall shot a 22-over-par, 302, in round one. The Hall was a victim of faster greens and higher winds with the late tee times as the No. 13 seed.
Â
North Florida currently leads the team field at 3-under-par. Host San Diego and West Virginia are currently tied for fifth place at 5-over-par. The Hall will need to make up 17 strokes over the next 36 holes as the top five teams at the end of three rounds will advance to the National Championship.
Â
Jack Bosworth (Daniel Island, S.C.) finished only one stroke behind Xie today. He had a birdie on the first hole and was 1-under though the first seven, but finished with a 5-over-par, 75. The sophomore is currently tied for 48th place overall.
Â
Junior George Fricker (Woodbridge, England) also got off to a hot start with birdies on the first two holes, but he struggled on the rest of the front nine. He was only 2-over-par on the back nine and finished with a 6-over-par, 76.
Â
David Lally (Wicklow, Ireland) carded the final "countable" score for the Pirates on Monday. The sophomore collected 13 pars, but a double-bogey on hole No. 13 and a triple on No. 18 made him settle with a 7-over-par, 77, in round one.
Â
Rounding out the Pirates' lineup, senior Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) was just 1-over-par through seven holes, but he struggled mightily down the stretch, finishing with a 13-over-par, 83.

THE COURSE
Built in 1988 in the ruggedly beautiful terrain of Rancho Santa Fe, one of San Diego's most prestigious communities, The Farms Golf Club, a private, member-owned equity club, was created and built for golf enthusiasts…golfers serious in their commitment to the game and its historical traditions.
Â
Originally designed by Pete, Perry and Alice Dye with assistance from golfing great Tommy Jacobs, The Farms golf course was extensively remodeled in 2000 under the guidance of golf course architect John Fought and his associate, PGA tour professional Tom Lehman.Â
Â
With modifications designed to improve the playability and maintainability of the course, changes included newly reconstructed and re-contoured bent grass putting greens that allow for more undulation and additional hole locations; new teeing areas and bunkering that test a player's ability to visualize and execute the proper shot; a state-of-the-art irrigation system; and a wonderful practice facility featuring a double-ended driving range, complete with target greens and bunkers. Nestled amid gently rolling hills and hollows, several additional water features and newly created high rough landscaping add to the course's beauty and the sense of peaceful seclusion that prevails on this championship course.
