
Pirates Show Heart in Four-Set Marquette Setback

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Sadie Reich (Wantagh, N.Y.) collected a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team couldn't overcome a slow start in a 3-1 (13-25, 16-25, 25-23, 20-25) loss to Marquette on Friday in Walsh Gym.

After scoring a combined 29 points in the first two sets, the Pirates showed significant resilience in outlasting Marquette for a 25-23 set three victory. The Hall was also within one point, 21-20, late in set four before the Golden Eagles took control.

Reich had a double-double with a team-best 16 kills to go with 11 digs. Junior Maddy Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.) had nine kills, only one attack error, a .296 attack percentage and three blocks. Freshman Rowan Carr (Lakeville, Minn.) had another strong effort with eight kills, six digs and two blocks.

SET 1:
Marquette started strong out of the gate, scoring seven of the first eight points of the match. A kill by Alex Rasmussen (Lincoln, Neb.) cut The Hall's deficit to 11-6, but the Golden Eagles answered with the next five points to grab a commanding 16-6 advantage. Marquette went on for a 25-13 victory, hitting .562 along the way.

SET 2:
The Golden Eagles started fast again, this time scoring five of the first six points in set two. Down 11-5, The Hall scored three straight points, two coming on Reich kills, to cut its deficit to 11-8. Marquette pulled away late to win set two, 25-16. The Golden Eagles had a far less impressive offensive showing with a .152 attack percentage, but the Pirates couldn't take advantage, hitting just .067.

Seton Hall grabbed their first lead of the match, opening set three with three of the first four points. A kill by Reich gave The Hall a 5-3 advantage, but the Golden Eagles responded with three straight to take the lead. Leading 11-10, Marquette scored four straight to grab a 15-10 lead. Trailing 17-12, The Hall went on a 7-0 run to grab a 19-17 advantage. With the score tied at 22, back-to-back kills by Loiselle and Reich put Seton Hall in set point, 24-22. After Marquette staved off one set point, another Reich kill gave The Hall a 25-23 victory to keep the match alive.

Trailing 6-2 early in set four, Seton Hall scored five straight to grab a 7-6 advantage. Marquette started to pull away, and twice grabbed a four-point lead, but both times Seton Hall rallied. Down 20-16, the Pirates scored four of the next five points, and a kill by Reich cut their deficit to 21-20. The Reich kill, however, was the last point of the match for The Hall as Marquette scored the final four points to close out a 25-20 victory. Reich had 11 of her 16 kills in sets three and four.
