SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Sadie Reich (Wantagh, N.Y.) collected a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team couldn't overcome a slow start in a 3-1 (13-25, 16-25, 25-23, 20-25) loss to Marquette on Friday in Walsh Gym.
Â
After scoring a combined 29 points in the first two sets, the Pirates showed significant resilience in outlasting Marquette for a 25-23 set three victory. The Hall was also within one point, 21-20, late in set four before the Golden Eagles took control.
Â
Reich had a double-double with a team-best 16 kills to go with 11 digs. Junior Maddy Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.) had nine kills, only one attack error, a .296 attack percentage and three blocks. Freshman Rowan Carr (Lakeville, Minn.) had another strong effort with eight kills, six digs and two blocks.
Â
SET 1:
Marquette started strong out of the gate, scoring seven of the first eight points of the match. A kill by Alex Rasmussen (Lincoln, Neb.) cut The Hall's deficit to 11-6, but the Golden Eagles answered with the next five points to grab a commanding 16-6 advantage. Marquette went on for a 25-13 victory, hitting .562 along the way.
Â
SET 2:
The Golden Eagles started fast again, this time scoring five of the first six points in set two. Down 11-5, The Hall scored three straight points, two coming on Reich kills, to cut its deficit to 11-8. Marquette pulled away late to win set two, 25-16. The Golden Eagles had a far less impressive offensive showing with a .152 attack percentage, but the Pirates couldn't take advantage, hitting just .067.
Â
SET 3:
Seton Hall grabbed their first lead of the match, opening set three with three of the first four points. A kill by Reich gave The Hall a 5-3 advantage, but the Golden Eagles responded with three straight to take the lead. Leading 11-10, Marquette scored four straight to grab a 15-10 lead. Trailing 17-12, The Hall went on a 7-0 run to grab a 19-17 advantage. With the score tied at 22, back-to-back kills by Loiselle and Reich put Seton Hall in set point, 24-22. After Marquette staved off one set point, another Reich kill gave The Hall a 25-23 victory to keep the match alive.
Â
SET 4:Â
Trailing 6-2 early in set four, Seton Hall scored five straight to grab a 7-6 advantage. Marquette started to pull away, and twice grabbed a four-point lead, but both times Seton Hall rallied. Down 20-16, the Pirates scored four of the next five points, and a kill by Reich cut their deficit to 21-20. The Reich kill, however, was the last point of the match for The Hall as Marquette scored the final four points to close out a 25-20 victory. Reich had 11 of her 16 kills in sets three and four.
