
Aguilar Leads Pirates in UAlbany Invitational Round 1

DELMAR, N.Y. – Sophomore Marta Aguilar (Casares Malaga, Spain) fired a 6-over-par, 76, to lead the Seton Hall women's golf team in round one of the UAlbany Great Danes Invitational on Sunday.

Despite dark skies, rain and high winds, Aguilar had a birdie and 11 pars to lead The Hall on Sunday. After 18 holes, she's tied for 20th place among 80 individual golfers. St. John's Kelly Wu is the individual leader entering Monday's final round after a 3-under-par, 67.

As a team, the Pirates shot a 31-over-par, 311, in the opening round and is in fifth place in the field of 14 teams. Boston University is currently the team leader at 6-over-par. Seton Hall's lone BIG EAST competition, St. John's, is in third place at 15-over-par.

Only one stroke behind Aguilar, Renee Rane (New Delhi, India) shot a 7-over-par, 77. The junior is tied for 24th place overall after two birdies and nine pars.

Senior Anne-Sofie Ekman (Copenhagen, Denmark) and freshman Isabella Stewart (Wickow, Ireland) are tied for 35th place at 9-over-par with a 79. Ekman had a birdie on the par 3, No. 13 hole to fuel her round, while Stewart birdied the par-4, No. 15 hole.

Rounding out the Pirates' lineup, junior Kasumi Tran (Swansea, Wales) shot a 12-over-par, 82.

Normanside Country Club opened its golf course in 1927. Â The course was designed by William Harries. Â During its many years of play, it has hosted many New York State Golf Association and United States Golf Association events. Â Notable among them are the 1952 Empire State open and the 1996 NYSGA Mid-Amateur Championship and the 2003 & 2008 NYS Senior Amateur Championship. Â Normanside has also served as a qualifying site for state and national events.

In addition to Seton Hall and host UAlbany, the field is comprised of 13 other teams including: Boston University, FDU, Hofstra, Holy Cross, Le Moyne, Merrimack, Niagara, Siena, Stonehill and Union College. Also joining the field is BIG EAST rival St. John's.

THE FORMAT
Teams will play five golfers and count the four lowest scores per round.

THE SCHEDULE
The field will play 18 holes on two days for two rounds total. The Pirates will be paired with golfers from Siena and FDU in round one with a shotgun start scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
