
Pirates Cruise Behind Big First Half, 80-66

SAN FRANCISCO – Five Pirates reached double-figures in scoring as the Seton Hall women's basketball team defeated San Francisco, 80-66, in its first road contest of the season on Friday.
Seton Hall seized control in the first half when it held the Dons scoreless for 11:17 of game time in the first half. In that time, the Pirates built a 20-point advantage. The Hall's lead never shrunk to single digits the rest of the way.
Junior Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, four steals and was a +17. Most impressively, she drew 14 fouls, contributing largely to San Francisco's deep foul trouble.
Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) had a team-high 16 points and Jordana Codio (Winter Garden, Fla.) tallied 14 points, while both Cam Rust (Wakefield, R.I.) and Mariana Valenzuela (Mazatlan, Mexico) scored 10 points apiece.
THE STORY:
Trailing 4-2 early in the first quarter, The Hall upped its defensive intensity and held the Dons scoreless for the final 7:59 of the opening frame. In that time, the Pirates went on a 15-2 run to grab a 17-6 advantage. Valenzuela had four points and five rebounds in the first 10 minutes to lead The Hall.
The Pirates opened the second quarter with the first nine points, extending their run to 24-2 to take a commanding 26-6 lead. Seton Hall held San Francisco scoreless for more than a quarter, keeping the Dons off the scoreboard from the 7:59 mark of the first quarter until the 6:42 mark of the second. San Francisco cut their deficit to 30-15, but The Hall closed out the half with a 9-0 run to take a 39-15 lead into the break.
San Francisco went on an 13-0 burst to cut its deficit to 43-32 with 6:11 to go in the third quarter as the Pirates struggled against the Dons' full-court press. San Francisco was 11-for-14 from the floor for the quarter, including 5-for-7 from three-point range. The Hall took a 13-point advantage into the fourth.
Leading 60-47, The Hall went on an 8-0 run, and a layup by Catalon gave it a 68-47 lead with 6:59 left in regulation and sent USF to a time out. The Pirates didn't let their lead get below 14 points the rest of the way.

Seton Hall will make the short trip from San Francisco to Stockton, Calif. for a game at Pacific on Sunday, Nov. 16. Tip-time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.

- Seton Hall was 30-for-65 (46.2%) from the floor for the game, while San Francisco was 25-for-60 (41.7%). The Hall was 5-for-18 (27.8%) from three-point range, while the Dons were 7-for-22 (31.8%).
- Catalon had 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting with seven rebounds, four steals, three assists, and 14 fouls drawn. She was also a +17.
- The Hall out-rebounded San Francisco, 41-to-33, which included a 13-to-9 edge on the offensive glass and a 12-to-8 advantage in second-chance points.
- Eads had a team-high 16 points with five assists and three rebounds.
- Seton Hall was 15-for-18 (83.3%) from the free-throw line, while San Francisco was 9-for-13 (69.2%).
- Codio had 14 points in only 16 minutes, but was marred by foul trouble early.
- Seton Hall forced 28 turnovers, while the Dons forced 25. The Hall had a slim 21-to-20 edge in points-off-turnovers.

- Seton Hall improves to 2-0 on the young season, while San Francisco drops to 1-2.
- The Pirates improve to 3-1 all-time against San Francisco and have won three straight in the series.
