SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Twelve players scored and the Seton Hall women's basketball team set a new program record for margin of victory in a BIG EAST game with an 81-36 victory over Georgetown on New Year's Eve in Walsh Gym on Wednesday.
Â
The 45-point victory is Seton Hall's largest ever against a BIG EAST opponent and its 36 points allowed are the fewest ever in conference play.
Â
Seton Hall used a dominant first quarter to pull away from the Hoyas early. The Pirates out-scored Georgetown, 28-8, in the first 10 minutes, shooting 64.3 percent form the floor and forcing eight turnovers to set the tone for the rest of the contest.
Â
Four Pirates reached double-figures in scoring, led by Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) who finished with 14 points, four rebounds and a season-high seven steals. Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) had 12 points and four assists. Zahara Bishop (Minneapolis, Minn.) totaled 11 points, while Ja'Kahla Craft (Elk River, Minn.) came off the bench to score 10 points with three rebounds and three steals.
Â
THE STORY:
Georgetown scored the first points of the contest only 25 seconds after the tip, but the Pirates' defense then held the Hoyas without a made field goal for the next 5:39, going on a 13-1 run. Codio hit a corner three-pointer with 4:15 left in the first, and off Georgetown's inbound, Catalon stole the ball at mid court and cruised in for a layup to give The Hall a 13-3 lead. The Pirates methodically increased their lead, thanks in large part to 4-for-7 shooting from three-point range, and took a commanding 28-8 lead into the second.
Â
Leading 32-13, The Hall closed the first half with an 8-0 burst, and a jumper by Shailyn Pinkney (East Hartford, Conn.) with 25 seconds left sent the Pirates into the break with a 40-13 advantage. The Hall forced 13 turnovers and held Georgetown to just 21.7 percent shooting in the first half.
Â
Seton Hall continued its offensive onslaught in the second half, beginning the third with an 11-4 burst, fueled by a made three-pointer by Eads, to extend its lead to 51-17 with 4:25 left in the quarter. Ja'Kahla Craft (Elk River, Minn.) drilled a transition three-pointer to cap a 12-2 Seton Hall burst and put it on top, 58-19, with 3:05 to go in the third.
Â
In the fourth, a made three-pointer by Natalia Hall-Rosa (Randolph, Mass.) gave Seton Hall its largest lead, 80-27, with 3:43 left in the game.
Â
THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will be back in action on Saturday, January 3 when it heads to Hartford to take on defending National Champion Connecticut. Tip-time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET. The game will be televised nationally on FS1.
