Washington, D.C. - Three Seton Hall women's tennis players picked up singles wins, but the Pirates were narrowly edged by Georgetown in the team result, 4-3, Friday at Yates Field House.
Paige Wise, Isabelle May and Isabelle Einess were winners for Seton Hall, and two other Pirates went to a third set, which could have tilted the match in their favor.
"The team fought hard for this one," said head coach James Enzler. "It definitely didn't come down to lack of effort. We're getting to that point in the season when the mental part of the game becomes just a little tougher. The excitement of the beginning of the season has rubbed off, and now we're into the midseason grind. We had some matches in which the points lost just weighted heavier on us than the points won. If you have that mentality for a whole match, it takes a toll on you, and that's what happened today.
"On the positive side, I'm really proud of Issy May today, acknowledging that struggle and focusing on it. She didn't let lost points get to her, and she stuck to her game plan phenomenally. As a team, I know we can overcome this and continue to improve in all aspects of our game moving forward."
Georgetown won a tight doubles point to go up 1-0 and narrowly came away with singles wins at No. 2 and No. 4, which both went three sets.
Wise was a winner at No. 3, defeating Natasha Kavarana, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, for her third singles win in a row. May topped Ellen Puzak in the No. 5 position, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(4) to improve to 4-0 in singles competition. Einess took the No. 6 win by default after a first-set victory to improve to 3-1.
Seton Hall is back in action right away Saturday, facing Monmouth in Little Silver, N.J., at 4 p.m.
