South Orange, N.J. -- The Seton Hall baseball team dropped its series opener against Marist on Friday afternoon, 8-0, at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.

The Red Foxes used small ball and timely hitting to take an early lead and they did not relinquish. Stephen Curry did a good job keeping the Pirates in the game as he tossed five innings of relief and allowed just one eared run.

How It Happened

With one out and two runners in scoring position in the top of the first inning, Seton Hall starter Ryan Reich picked up his second strikeout but the ball go away and went to the backstop, allowing Marist to score its first run of the game. The miscue later led to a sacrifice fly for Marist that extended its lead to 2-0.

The Pirates went quietly in the bottom of the first as the Red Foxes continued their momentum in the top of the second. Back-to-back bunts led to two more runs for Marist, putting its lead at 4-0. Curry would come on in the top of the third and toss a scoreless frame but the Pirates' offense still couldn't muster a run, even though AJ Soldra drove a ball to the center field fence with a runner out that was caught and brought back into play for the final out of the inning. Meanwhile, Marist tacked on two more runs in the fourth on an errant throw and an RBI single that made it 6-0.

Seton Hall would get its first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as Jimmy Brennan singled through the left side but the Pirates couldn't advance him any further. Curry retired the Red Foxes in order in the top of the seventh and Connor Byrne came out of the bullpen to toss a scoreless eighth. Despite the bullpen's best efforts, a two-run home run for Marist in the top of the ninth iced an 8-0 win to open the series.

The second game of the series will take place tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium. Seton Hall baseball will celebrate its seniors and graduate students as part of Senior Day at 12:30 p.m.
