CHICAGO – Three Pirates scored at least 20 points and the Seton Hall women's basketball team outlasted a pesky DePaul squad, 86-77, on the road on Saturday.
The game was a shootout from the start with both teams finishing the game shooting better than 47 percent from the floor. Ultimately, the Pirates were able to outlast the Blue Demons, shooting 50 percent in the second half to pull away. The Pirates had to play the majority of the game without point guard Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) who was lost just 2:42 into the game with an injury.
Junior Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) finished with a game-high 24 points with four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Jordana Codio (Winter Garden, Fla.) and Zahara Bishop (Minneapolis, Minn.) each poured in a career-high in scoring. Codio had 22 points to go with six rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals, while Bishop finished with 21 points on an efficient 8-for-10 shooting.
THE STORY:
Neither team grabbed a lead of greater than four points in the first quarter and the Pirates trailed, 20-18, after the first 10 minutes. Down 34-30 in the second quarter, The Hall went on a 9-2 run and a made three-pointer by Mariana Valenzuela (Mazatlan, Mexico) with 2:47 left in the first half gave it a 39-36 advantage. After five straight points by DePaul, the Pirates closed the half with an 8-1 burst to take a 47-42 lead into the break.
Seton Hall led by five at the half despite allowing DePaul to shoot 55 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
Trailing 51-50, The Hall went on a 12-0 run and a made jumper by Codio gave the Pirates a 62-51 lead with 2:58 left in the third quarter. Codio was responsible for eight of the Pirates' 12 points during the run. The Hall got its lead up to 13 points, 66-53, with 1:02 left in the third, but DePaul closed the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers.
The Hall opened the fourth quarter with seven of the first nine points and a pair of made free-throws by Catalon put it on top, 73-61, with 7:36 left to play. The Seton Hall lead remained in double figures until a DePaul three-point play with 10 seconds left cut it to nine.
Seton Hall will be back in action on Tuesday, January 20 when it returns to historic Walsh Gymnasium to take on BIG EAST foe, Providence. Tip-time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
