SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Jordana Codio (Winter Garden, Fla.) scored a game-high 20 points, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to Creighton, 72-66, in historic Walsh Gymnasium on Sunday.
Â
Trailing by two possessions for most of the game, the Pirates went particularly cold from the field at the worst time, going scoreless for the first 6:12 of the fourth quarter and allowing the Bluejays to increase their lead to 12 points. The Hall was able to cut its deficit to three, but ultimately ran out of time.
Â
The loss is Seton Hall's first against an opponent other than No. 1 Connecticut since Dec. 19.
Â
Codio had 20 points, and six rebounds to lead The Hall. Junior Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) had 15 points and three steals. Shailyn Pinkney (East Hartford, Conn.) was a third Pirate to score in double-figures. She finished with 11 points and four rebounds.
Â
THE STORY:
A made three-pointer by Valenzuela gave The Hall an early 7-5 lead, but Creighton answered with a 9-0 run to grab a 14-7 advantage with 3:31 left in the first quarter. The Hall got beaten badly on the glass in the first 10 minutes, 16-to-7, which included six offensive rebounds for the Bluejays. Creighton took a 21-15 lead into the second quarter.Â
Â
The Pirates rebounded better in the second, but Creighton made four three-pointers and maintained its six-point lead into the halftime break. The Bluejays shot 44.4 percent from the floor in the opening half and drained six three-pointers.
Â
Trailing 60-55 entering the fourth quarter, the Pirates were held scoreless for the first 6:12, allowing Creighton to build a commanding 67-55. A made three-pointer by Pinkney spearheaded a 9-0 burst for The Hall to cut its deficit to 67-64 with 1:25 remaining. The Bluejays made five of six free-throws in the final 32 seconds to ice the game.
