TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Junior Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) fired a 1-over-par, 73, to lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to a 22nd place standing following round one of the East Regional of the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships in Tallahassee on Thursday.Kruse's impressive first round could been even better, but she became the fifth Pirate to fall victim to SouthWood Golf Club's dreaded eighth and ninth holes. Kruse was 1-under-par, but bogeyed both eight and nine to end her round.
Kruse is currently tied for 46th place among 126 individuals. Tulane's Emily Penttila is the individual leader in the clubhouse following her first round 7-under-par, 65.
Collectively, Seton Hall fired a 14-over-par, 302, which is well below its scoring average for the year. The Pirates however, were a combined 10-over-par on holes eight and nine alone. Vanderbilt is the team leader in the clubhouse following an 11-under-par, 277, in round one. The Pirates, who entered the tournament as the 23rd ranked team in the 24-team field, have a five-stroke lead on Murray State and a 13-stroke lead on Alabama State for 22nd place.
"I'm very pleased with our effort and performance today," said Head Coach Sara Doell. "We put up a very respectable score amid new distractions. Our score could have been much better, so I like our chances to improve as the tournament progresses."
Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) was 4-over-par on the back nine, but rebounded nicely on the second nine. The junior was 3-under-par through the first seven holes on the front nine, but bogeyed both eight and nine. McClure finished the round with an impressive 3-over-par, 75. She's currently tied for 70th place.
Senior Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) and sophomore Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) rounded out the Pirates' first round scoring with a 5-over-par, 77, each. Basalone had seven pars and two bogeys on the back nine, but a dreaded double-bogey on hole nine at the end of her round dipped her score. Tenhundfeld was 1-under on the front nine until a double-bogey on hole eight marred a strong second half.
Sophomore Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) shot a 40 on both the front and nine on Thursday to finish with an 8-over-par, 80.
