Mental Health Emergency Action Plan
Seton Hall University Athletics Mental Health Emergency Action Plan is designed to coordinate athletic department personnel, sports medicine department personnel, campus public safety, and CAPS to provide a safe, expedient resolution to a life-threatening medical or mental health situation concerning a student-athlete. Seton Hall University personnel will follow, where it applies, all federal FERPA and HIPAA privacy regulations and New Jersey State regulations regarding these situations.

- Suicidal and/ or homicidal ideation,
- Sexual assault
- Agitation or threatening behavior, acute psychosis or paranoia
- Acute delirium/ confusional state
- Acute intoxication or drug overdose
Procedure

On-Campus:
- If a student or SA is in a life-threatening situation due to one’s mental health call 911 first.
- Give the location and the disposition of the student athlete. Do not leave the student athlete.
- When contacting EMS provide the following information:
- Name and title of personnel calling
- Number of student-athletes involved
- Site address and telephone number
- Condition of the patient(s)
- Type and nature of injury sustained
- Cardio-respiratory arrest
- Type of treatment initiated and by whom
- Specific directions to the scene/venue
- Do not hang up until told to do so
- When possible try and direct the ambulance to: Overlook Medical Center, 99 Beauvoir Ave., Summit, NJ 07901 (ER Phone Number 908-522-2232)
- When EMS has taken over patient care in the ambulance, the first responder should contact the Director of Sports Medicine at 973-356-6707.
- The Director of Sports Medicine will notify the treating Athletic Trainer, Head Coach, CAPS personnel on call, and Athletic Administrator. Â
While traveling or off Campus:
- If a student or SA is in a life-threatening mental health crisis and you are traveling with an athletic trainer, contact them. If not call 911.
- Give the location and the disposition of the student athlete. Do not leave the student athlete.
- When contacting EMS provide the following information:
- Name and title of personnel calling
- Number of student-athletes involved
- Site address and telephone number
- Condition of the patient(s)
- Type and nature of injury sustained
- Cardio-respiratory arrest
- Type of treatment initiated and by whom
- Specific directions to the scene/venue
- Do not hang up until told to do so
- Â When EMS has taken over patient care in the ambulance, find out the name, location and contact information of the hospital the patient will be transported too.
- The first responder should contact the Director of Sports Medicine at 973-356-6707.
- The Director of Sports Medicine will notify the treating Athletic Trainer, Head Coach, CAPS personnel on call, and Athletic Administrator.Â
