Women's Basketball Falls To St. John's, 59-54

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (February 29, 2000)- Junior Arminda Moreno (Telde, Canary Islands) scored a game-high 17 points but Seton Hall turned the ball over 29 times and lost to St. John's, 59-54, in BIG EAST women's basketball action at Walsh Gym. It was the last game of the regular season for both teams. Seton Hall is 11-15 overall and 5-11 in the BIG EAST while St. John's improves to 10-17 and 5-11 in the league.
Seton Hall will be the No. 10 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST women's basketball tournament, while St. John's clinched the No. 9 seed with the win. Seton Hall will face No. 7-seed Miami at 6:30 pm on Saturday, March 4, at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, CT.
The Pirates could not overcome a sluggish first half and they trailed, 29-19, turning the ball over 15 times and shooting just 35.3 percent. The Pirates cut the lead to six points (42-36 with 8:17 left) but St. John's responded with a 9-2 run. Seton Hall would finally cut it to four (57-53) but with just five seconds left.
Junior Starr Fuller (Boston, MA) added 12 points for the Pirates, who outrebounded St. John's 35-27. Moreno, who scored 15 or more points for the eighth straight game, also added five rebounds but turned the ball over seven times.
St. John's was led by guard Giani Bowles, who scored 17 points. Latasha Thompson (11 points) and Tynisha Myles (10 points) rounded out the Red Storm's double-figure scorers.
