3/8/2026 1:17:00 AM | Women's Basketball
UNCASVILLE, CONN. – Senior Jordana Codio (Winter Garden, Fla.) erupted for a career-high 35 points to lift the Seton Hall women's basketball team to a thrilling 63-61 victory over St. John's in the quarterfinals of the 2026 BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena late Saturday night.
The victory sends the third-seeded Pirates into the semifinals for a second straight year where they'll meet second-seeded Villanova at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The Hall's lead ballooned to as many as 13 points in the second quarter before St. John's rallied and kept it largely a two-possession game the rest of the way. The Pirates' defense late kept the Red Storm from taking the lead despite seeing their lead shrink to just one point on three separate occasions in the fourth quarter.
Codio was brilliant shooting 13-for-26 from the field, including 6-for-9 from three-point range for a career-high 35 points, falling just a single-point shy of Lauren Park-Lane's Seton Hall BIG EAST Tournament record. Junior Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals.
THE STORY:
Both teams came out of the gate on fire from the field. No one was hotter than Codio, who scored 12 of Seton Hall's first 14 points. St. John's shot 57 percent from the floor in the first 10 minutes, but The Hall forced seven Red Storm turnovers and brought a 16-14 lead into the second.
Leading 19-16, The Hall went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by made three-pointers by Codio and Catalon on back-to-back possessions, to give it a commanding 29-16 lead with 5:19 to go before halftime and send St. John's to a timeout. A driving layup by Ari Woodard (Oviedo, Fla.) put The Hall up 36-27 with 2:31 before the break, but St. John's closed the half with a 5-1 burst to cut their deficit to 37-32 at halftime.
After a punch-counterpunch third quarter, The Hall took a 53-47 lead into the fourth. A made pull up jumper by Codio gave Seton Hall a 58-50 lead with 7:12 left in the game, but St. John's answered with a 7-0 run to cut their deficit to just one point, 58-57, with 4:32 remaining. Still down one, St. John's had a chance to win the game late. Coming off a timeout, the Red Storm used some clock and then Shaulana Wagner missed a shot with three seconds left. Codio grabbed a highly contested rebound and was fouled. She made the second shot extending The Hall's lead to two points with one second left, and St. John's couldn't get a shot off in time.
With the victory, Seton Hall will advance to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday, March 8 and face No. 2 Villanova at Mohegan Sun Arena. Tip-time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. It will be streamed live on Peacock and simulcast on NBCSN.
