Women's Basketball Falls to Connecticut in BIG EAST Action

Jadis Rhodin dropped in 12 points with five rebounds for Seton Hall.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s basketball team dropped its first BIG EAST contest of the season, a 93-53 setback to seventh-ranked Connecticut on Tuesday night at Walsh Gym. The Huskies shot 60.3 percent from the floor, while the Pirates were held to 34.8 percent. With the loss, SHU falls to 5-9 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play, while UConn improves to 13-2 and 3-0.

The Pirates, who hit a season-high seven three-pointers in an upset over 12th-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday, were held to 3-of-19 from behind the arc, while the Huskies shot a blistering 13-of-21 (61.9 percent) from three-point range. UConn hit its first three treys of the game to jump out to a 9-4 lead, but SHU battled back to within 11-9 after freshman Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) hit a three-pointer at the 14:54 mark.

Connecticut responded with a 13-2 run to go ahead 24-11 after Ketia Swanier hit a layup with 9:09 to go in the half. The Pirates hung around and had a chance to cut the Huskies lead at the 5:36 mark when freshman Noteisha Womack (Fort Washington, Md.) was fouled. Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma drew a technical on the play. Junior Heta Korpivaara (Espoo, Finland) hit one foul shot for the technical, and Womack hit the front-end of a one-and-one, but SHU controlled the rebound and freshman Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) hit a three-pointer to draw the Pirates within 27-21. That was as close as Seton Hall would get, however, as Connecticut went on an 11-2 run to close the half and take a 38-23 lead into halftime.

The Huskies came out in the second half and took control of the game over an eight-minute span midway through the period. Rhodin hit consecutive jumpers to pull Seton Hall within 49-35 at the 15:25 mark before the visitors went on a 32-7 run to put the game away. The Huskies hit seven three’s during the spurt, while the Pirates hit just two field goals before Rhodin hit another three-pointer at the 6:49 mark to make it 81-45.

The Huskies’ win was the 22nd straight in the series dating back to Jan. 5, 1994, when the Pirates defeated the then-No. 8 Huskies, 74-53. Korpivaara led Seton Hall with 17 points, while Rhodin and junior Monique Blake (Union, N.J.) added 12 points apiece. Blake added a game-high nine rebounds and four blocks. Womack set a career-high with nine boards of her own.

The Huskies were paced by Renee Montgomery’s 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Mel Thomas and Ann Strother each knocked down four three-pointers to finish with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Strother added a game-high five assists.

The Pirates return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14, when they face ninth-ranked Rutgers at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J., at 2:00 p.m.
