SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team returns to action on Tuesday night with a 7:00 p.m. game against Iona in Walsh Gym. The Pirates (2-2) are coming off a 70-61 loss to Massachusetts in the championship of the Aeropostale Seton Hall Basketball Classic, while the Gaels (2-1) are coming off a 72-45 win against Fordham.
Seton Hall has been led by seniors Monique Blake and Heta Korpivaara this year. Blake leads the team with 13.0 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 50 percent from the field. Korpivaara has added 12.0 points and is among the league leaders in free throw percentage. Blake earned a spot on the all-tournament team last weekend with averages of 17.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in two games. Sophomore Shantel Brown also earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Iona upset St. John’s in the first round of the Preseason WNIT, before falling at N.C. State. Iona rebounded with a convincing 72-45 win over Fordham on Friday night. Anthony Bozzella, a 1988 Seton Hall grad, has turned around the fortunes of the Iona program as the team was picked as the preseason favorite in the MAAC and feature three preseason All-MAAC selections. Tiara Headen (2nd Team) leads the squad in scoring (10.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 rpg), but did not play in the win over Fordham. Toni Horvath (3rd Team) is averaging 5.0 points and has a team-best 12 assists to just four turnovers. Last season, she led the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio. Martina Huber was the Preseason MAAC Player of the Year, but she has yet to play a game this season. She averaged 15.3 points and 6.6 boards per game last season.
