GAME NOTES (.pdf)
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 26, when it hosts Army in a 2:00 p.m. game in Walsh Gym. The Pirates are coming off a convincing 75-50 win over Iona on Tuesday, while the Black Knights won their fourth-straight with a 54-51 win against New Hampshire on Wednesday.
The Pirates currently have eight players averaging at least 5.0 points per game, led by seniors Heta Korpivaara (13.2) and Monique Blake (12.4). The win over Iona marked the first time SHU scored at least 70 points since a 74-61 win at Notre Dame on Jan. 6, 2005, but it was the 24th straight win when SHU reaches that scoring plateau dating back to 1998-99. The Pirates’ defense has been key this season and ranks fifth in the BIG EAST, allowing just 57.2 points per game, even more impressive is that the Pirates are forcing over 20 turnovers per game. SHU recorded 19 steals against Iona, the fifth-best mark in the program’s history, while freshman Nicole Emery swiped a career-high seven.
Dave Magarity took over the Army program following the tragic passing of Maggie Dixon who had led the Black Knights to their first NCAA appearance ever in 2006. Magarity was the Associate Head Coach last season, helping Army to a 20-11 mark and producing the league’s Player of the Year, Cara Enright and Rookie of the Year, Alex McGuire. The Black Knights were picked in the preseason poll to repeat as Patriot League champs. With the return of both Enright and McGuire, Army has already knocked off one BIG EAST school in St. John’s. Enright was picked as the league’s preseason Player of the Year. The junior is averaging 20.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and has a team-high 14 steals. Megan Evans leads the team with 9.4 rebounds per game, while McGuire is averaging 13.4 points and has a team-best 15 assists.
