Blake Leads Women's Basketball Past Army, 65-54

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Senior Monique Blake (Union, N.J.) posted her third double-double of the season to lead the Seton Hall women’s basketball team over Army, 65-54, on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gym. The Pirates had four players in double-figures to win their second-straight game and improved to 4-2 on the year, while snapping Army’s five-game win streak.

Seton Hall trailed 29-28 at halftime and fell behind by three after the Black Knights’ Megan Evans converted a layup to open the second half. The Pirates responded by running off the next 10 points, six of them coming from Blake. A jumper from junior Ela Mukosiej (Bialystok, Poland) capped the run to put SHU ahead 38-31 at the 16:14 mark.

Army (5-2) whittled the Pirates’ lead to 44-42 after Alex McGuire hit a three-pointer and Cara Enright converted a three-point play at the 8:43 mark. Seton Hall then went on an 11-2 run after sophomore Noteisha Womack (Fort Washington, Md.) put back a layup to start the spurt and help SHU build a 55-44 lead with 3:55 to play. Freshman Ashley Booker (Oceanside, Calif.), who made her first career start hit four foul shots down the stretch and sophomore Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) hit a lay-up with six seconds left to seal the victory.

The Pirates came out of the gates quick and looked like they would put the Black Knights away early, building a 12-2 lead on six points each from Mukosiej and senior Heta Korpivaara (Espoo, Finland). Army showed resolve and quickly closed the gap to 14-12 at the 11:33 mark. Seton Hall managed to push the lead back to 28-18 after Blake hit a layup at the 3:12 mark, but Army took the lead into halftime after Jen Hansen hit three three-pointers and Alex McGuire added a layup to make it 29-28 at intermission.

Blake led the Pirates with 13 points and 10 boards, while Rhodin added 12 points and Mukosiej and Korpivaara had 10 apiece. Womack chipped in with seven points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Booker filled in for an injured Shantel Brown and scored six points with four rebounds, four assists and no turnovers in 29 minutes.  Seton Hall was outshot, 40.4 percent-39.7 percent, but held a commanding 49-32 advantage on the glass.

McGuire led all scorers with 22 points, while Hansen was the only other Army player in double-figures with 13 points. Enright entered the game as Army’s leading scorer with 19.8 points per game, but was held to three points on 1-of-13 shooting from the floor.

Seton Hall returns to the road on Wednesday, Nov. 29, with a 7:00 p.m. game against Hartford in West Hartfor, Conn.
