Women's Basketball Overpowered by Louisville, 65-45

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Louisville Cardinals came into Walsh Gym on Saturday afternoon and used a strong inside game to overwhelm Seton Hall and claim a 65-45 win. The Pirates were outrebounded, 52-37, and shot just 27.1 percent from the field as the Cardinals never trailed in the game. SHU was led by Shantel Brown’s 11 points, while U of L had three players in double-figures and Angel McCoughtry recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Prior to the game Seton Hall honored its two seniors, Julie Costello and Keri Shutz.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first half, before freshman Noteisha Womack (Fort Washington, Md.) hit a turnaround jumper and Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) hit a three-pointer to get SHU within 10-7 at the 12:29 mark. The Pirates cut the deficit to one on the next possession when Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) hit a layup. However, the Cardinals responded with 14-4 run to take a 24-13 lead at the 3:43 mark when Chauntise Wright was fouled on a layup and converted the foul shot.

Rhodin answered with a three-pointer before Jazz Covington hit two foul shots to put U of L up 28-16. Freshman Brittney Messina (Massapequa, N.Y.) hit a three and a layup to get SHU within 28-21, before McCoughtry hit a jumper with a minute to play in the half for a 30-21 halftime score.

The Pirates closed the gap in the second half when Brown hit a layup and a jumper, sandwiched around two foul shots from Monique Blake (Union, N.J.) to make it 32-27 with 17:21 to go, but that was as close as SHU got. The Cardinals scored seven straight points, four of them coming from McCoughtry to go ahead 39-27 with 11:42 to go. Senior Keri Shutz (Edison, N.J.) stopped the spurt with a three-pointer, followed by a jumper from Heta Korpivaara (Espoo, Finland) to close within 39-32.

The Cardinals pushed the lead to double-figures after Jazz Covington hit back-to-back layups and eventually got the lead to 56-39 with 4:15 to play when McCoughtry converted a layup. Shutz hit a three-pointer to cut it to 56-42 with just under four minutes remaining, but that was SHU’s last field goal as the Cardinals converted their foul shots down the stretch and claimed a final 65-45 win.

Brown was the only Pirate in double-figures, but Blake chipped in with eight points. Shutz and Rhodin each had six, but SHU couldn’t overcome its shooting struggles despite forcing 21 Louisville turnovers. The Pirates suffered their largest rebounding deficit of the year.

In addition to McCoughtry’s double-double off the bench, Covington added 14 points and seven boards for the Cardinals. Jessica Huggins finished with 10 points to round out Louisville’s double-figures scorers. The Cardinals shot 42.3 percent from the field and hit four three-pointers.

The Pirates conclude the regular-season on Tuesday night with a 7:00 p.m. game against St. John’s in Jamaica, N.Y.
