Seton Hall will try to snap a four-game skid tonight in a BIG EAST battle with West Virginia. The Pirates won last year’s meeting against the Mountaineers in South Orange, 67-61. Shantel Brown scored 17 points to lead four SHU players in double figures.
Seton Hall fell to 9-7 overall and 1-4 in the BIG EAST on Jan. 13 when Rutgers escaped Walsh Gymnasium with a 62-50 win. Monique Blake led the Pirates with 16 points and 12 rebounds, pushing her past the 1,000-point mark for her career and into 17th place all-time at SHU. Jadis Rhodin and Nicole Emery each added seven points.
The Pirates are led by Blake, who leads the team in scoring (12.2 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg). Blake scored in double-figures in eight straight games at one point and has posted six double-doubles on the season. Seton Hall has a perfect 9-0 record when holding teams to 55 points or less. The Pirates have allowed only three opponents to score more than 70 points, while also holding two below 50.
The Mountaineers have won two straight, knocking off No. 24 DePaul on the road before returning home to defeat Providence. WVU is currently ninth in the BIG EAST at 2-3. Junior center Olayinka Sanni leads the Mountaineers in both scoring and rebounding with 13.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg. Junior guard Laquita Owens averages 11.3 ppg and is the team’s top three-point threat with 39 triples on the season. Junior forward Chakia Cole also averages double figures with 10.4 ppg to go along with 6.0 rpg.
Head coach Mike Carey is in his sixth season with the Mountaineers after spending 13 years at the helm of the Salem International men’s program. WVU made a Cinderella run to the BIG EAST Championship title game a year ago before bowing to UConn, 50-44.
