SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Junior Ela Mukosiej (Bilystok, Poland) matched her career-high with 23 points as the Seton Hall women’s basketball team fought off Georgetown, 71-67. The Pirates (14-8, 6-5) overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to knock off the Hoyas (12-12, 2-9) and extend their winning streak to five games.
Senior Heta Korpivaara (Espoo, Finland) and sophomore Noteisha Womack (Ft. Washington, Md.) each netted 14, while freshman Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) was also in double figures with a career-high 12. Shanice Fuller paced Georgetown with 21 points.
With SHU trailing 59-56, Emery followed a driving lay-up with a three-pointer from the left side to give the Pirates a two-point edge with 2:37 left. After a defensive stop, Mukosiej drilled a contested three to make it 64-59. The Hoyas tried to play catch-up, but a 5-of-6 free throw shooting performance by Mukosiej and a 2-for-2 effort from Womack sealed the victory.
With both teams utilizing a fullcourt pressure defense, the game started off at a breakneck pace. Korpivaara scored 12 of the first 17 SHU points as the Pirates took a two-point lead with 13:20 to go. Kristin Heidloff’s trifecta put Georgetown ahead at 22-19, and the Hoyas would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the half, going into the break with a 37-29 edge.
Womack’s three-point play sparked a 10-0 run out of the break, capped off by an Emery shot from beyond the arc, to give SHU a two-point lead. Georgetown regrouped to go back up 47-44 on another Heidloff bomb, and the teams would briefly trade the lead before the Hoyas took their final advantage on free throws from Kieraah Wheeler and Heidloff.
SHU won for the first time this season when allowing its opponent to break the 60-point barrier. Georgetown shot 64.0 percent in the first half and 52.0 percent for the game, while the Pirates finished at 41.5 percent. The Hall enjoyed a huge advantage at the foul line, hitting 23-of-27 to the Hoyas’ 10-of-13. SHU also won the battle of the boards, 34-26.
The Pirates have won five straight BIG EAST games for the first time since the close of the 1993-94 regular season. SHU will seek the 500th win in program history on Sunday when Villanova visits for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
