Women's Basketball Downed By St. John's, 77-71

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. An early second half surge propelled St. John’s to a 77-71 win over the Seton Hall women’s basketball team on Tuesday night at Walsh Gymnasium.  The Pirates (13-6, 3-4) were led by senior Ela Mukosiej (Bialystok, Poland), who scored 20 points.

Junior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) added 12 points, while senior Amber Harris (Washington, Pa.) tacked on 11 points and eight rebounds.  Monique McLean led the Red Storm (11-9, 2-5) with 20 points.

Seton Hall started off strong, taking its largest lead of the game on a Mukosiej jumper that made it 16-12 with 10 minutes left in the first half.  With the game tied at 25, Reece Mitchell sparked a 9-2 run that saw the Red Storm take a 36-27 edge into halftime.

Harris jumpstarted an 8-0 Pirates’ run with a 3-pointer out of the break as SHU closed to within 36-35.  St. John’s would not relinquish the lead, however, and a 14-3 spurt later in the half saw the Red Storm take control, 58-44, with 8:45 to play.

Kia Wright’s layup with just over four minutes left gave SJU a 65-48 advantage, and Seton Hall failed to mount a comeback down the stretch, drawing to within six only after Mukosiej’s trifecta at the final horn.

Turnovers plagued the Hall as it finished the game with 20 giveaways.  The Pirates managed to outshoot the Red Storm, 43.3% to 42.0%, while also posting a 37-32 edge on the glass.  St. John’s enjoyed a decisive advantage at the foul line, hitting 30-of-41 to the Hall’s 14-of-20.

The Pirates are back in action at home on Saturday, Feb. 3 against West Virginia at 2:00 p.m.
