MILWAUKEE, Wisc. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team lost its sixth straight game on Saturday, falling at Marquette, 88-71. The Pirates (13-11, 3-9) return to action next Saturday when they host Louisville at 2:00 p.m.
Marquette jumped out to an 8-0 lead early before sophomore Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored back-to-back buckets on the inside to get the Pirates rolling. Freshman Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) brought SHU to within 10-8 with a jumper at the 15:16 mark, but the Golden Eagles answered with their third 3-pointer of the half to spark a 7-2 run that made it 17-10.
Marquette stretched its advantage to 24-13 before Williams stemmed the tide with a midrange jumper and 1-of-2 free throws to make it 24-16 with 8:38 to play. SHU kept coming, using a layup from sophomore Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) and a fastbreak basket from Ashley Booker (San Diego, Calif.) to make it 24-20.
After a putback by junior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.), the Hall trailed 29-27 with 4:56 remaining. Brown and Williams buried consecutive 3-pointers minutes later as the Pirates tied the score at 35 with 1:37 to go. Marquette scored the half’s final five points to take a 40-35 lead into intermission.
Emery converted two scores early in the second stanza, but a 3-pointer from Marquette’s Krystal Ellis gave the Golden Eagles a 45-39 lead with 17:43 to go. The lead reached 10 twice before Emery completed a 3-point play with 15:56 remaining to keep things close.
A 19-3 run gave the Golden Eagles a 70-47 lead with 10:10 left as Marquette went wild from 3-point territory. Courtney Weibel drained a trio of 3-pointers in the spurt while Tatiyiana McMorris had a pair, and the lead would reach 25 by the 7:57 mark.
Williams led Seton Hall with 17 points while playing a full 40 minutes for the second straight game. Brown added 13 points while Emery chipped in 11. Rhodin brought in a team-high eight rebounds.
Ellis led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 22 points. Marquette connected on 11-of-20 from beyond the arc and turned 22 Pirates’ turnovers into 31 points.
