After Pitt’s Shavonte Zellous cut the lead to one with a 3-pointer, sophomore Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) hit a driving layup to make it 17-14 with 7:48 to play. But the Panthers kept coming, taking their first lead of the game, 19-17, on a trifecta from Xenia Stewart a minute later.
Seton Hall stayed close, never trailing by more than four in the remainder of the half. Williams hit a twisting jumper with 19 seconds on the clock that sent the Pirates into the break trailing 31-28. SHU hit 61.1% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes but was harmed by 13 turnovers.
Chelsea Cole pushed the Pitt lead to eight early in the second half before Williams answered with a three for the Pirates that made it 38-33 with 15:48 left. The Panthers continued to build a lead, however, going up 43-33 after a bucket by Taneisha Harrison two minutes later.
Brown buried a 3-pointer to break a drought of over three minutes for SHU that cut the lead to seven with 12:37 on the clock. Pitt answered once again, pushing the lead to 11 after a Mallorie Winn free throw at the 8:58 mark. The Panthers pulled away from there, expanding the lead down the stretch all the way to the final margin of 64-44.
Williams was the only Pirate in double digits with 13 points. Chelsea Cole paced Pitt with 17.
Seton Hall struggled from the field in the second half, hitting just 19.2%, while Pitt buried 54.5% of its attempts after the break.
