SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall women’s basketball program has announced its 2008-09 schedule, highlighted by a pair of games at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The season opener will be played at The Rock against Rider on November 14 as part of a doubleheader with the men’s program.
The Seton Hall Basketball Classic returns with the Pirates hosting Wagner on Nov. 21 before taking on either UMBC or Northern Illinois the following day. SHU will be looking for its fourth consecutive victory in an in-season tournament.
Seton Hall hits the west coast for its first road trip of the season at San Diego on Nov. 28. The Pirates defeated the Toreros 69-55 in the championship game of last year’s Seton Hall Basketball Classic. SHU returns home for contests with Marshall on Dec. 6 and Colorado on Dec. 9 before taking on local rival Saint Peter’s on Dec. 13 at the Jersey City Armory.
The Pirates are back in Prudential Center on Dec. 20 to host N.C. State and legendary head coach Kay Yow. The Wolfpack went 21-13 a year ago and reached the semifinals of the WNIT.
Road trips to Saint Joseph’s on Dec. 22 and Massachusetts on Dec. 29 are followed by the final game of the calendar year on Dec. 31 at home against Norfolk State.
BIG EAST play kicks off on Jan.3 when Notre Dame pays a visit to Walsh Gymnasium. The Fighting Irish are coming off a season in which they went 25-9 and made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Following a trip to Louisville on Jan. 6, the Pirates are back home to host Marquette, last season’s WNIT Champion, on Jan. 10.
Games at Syracuse on Jan. 13 and Cincinnati on Jan. 17 lead up to home contests against Pittsburgh on Jan. 20 and Providence on Jan. 24. On Jan. 26, the Hall steps out of conference for a night and heads to the University of Pennsylvania.
The first of two meetings with St. John’s comes on Feb. 1 at Walsh Gymnasium, followed by a trip to West Virginia on Feb. 4. After a visit from Villanova on Feb. 7, the Pirates travel to DePaul on Feb. 11 and USF on Feb. 14.
Rutgers, coming off a 27-7 season and an Elite Eight appearance, comes to South Orange on Feb. 18 as the Pirates and Scarlet Knights renew their rivalry. After traveling to St. John’s on Feb. 25, the Hall will make the trek to the XL Center in Hartford to face Connecticut, which is coming off another Final Four berth in 2007-08. Seton Hall closes its regular season by hosting Georgetown on Mar. 2
