SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team picked up its first BIG EAST win of the season on Saturday with a 65-55 victory over Marquette at Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates (12-3, 1-2) were led by senior Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.), who recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 16 points and 17 rebounds.
Senior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) poured in a season-high 20 points to go along with four boards and two assists. Junior Shantel Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) was also in double figures with 12 points.
Angel Robinson led the Golden Eagles (10-6, 1-1) with 21 points.
A fastbreak layup by Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) with 16:02 to go gave the Pirates their first lead of the game, 8-6. The first 3-pointer of the season by Brown stretched it to a 13-8 advantage three and a half minutes later, and she connected again from deep at the 10:59 mark to make it 18-10.
Rhodin continued the Hall’s barrage from beyond the arc at the 7:53 mark, giving the Pirates a 21-15 lead. But Marquette tied the game on a Krystal Ellis bomb from the corner before taking a 23-21 advantage on a fastbreak bucket on the inside by Jessica Pachko with 5:58 remaining.
Emery ended a 15-3 run for the Golden Eagles with a scoop shot from the right block, and the Pirates evened the score on a layup from Shanai Heber (Paterson, N.J.). Rhodin knocked down another trey from the right corner to make it a 7-0 run and put Seton Hall back in front, 28-25. The teams went into the break tied at 30.
A steal and layup by Rhodin put the Pirates in front, 38-36, with 16:18 to go. Emery scored off a dish from Heber in transition three minutes later as the Hall went up by six, and two Womack free throws at the 11:54 mark made it 46-38. The lead reached 10 with 10:29 left when Brown hit Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) underneath for score, and Rhodin pushed it to a 53-40 spread with a 3-pointer 30 seconds later.
A pair of free throws by Angel Robinson brought Marquette to within 53-47 with 5:50 remaining, and her driving layup a minute later cut it to four. Womack finally broke a scoreless drought of five and a half minutes for the Pirates with a hookshot in the lane, making it 55-49.
Wood drained a 3-pointer with 3:09 left to give the Hall some breathing room at 58-49. Marquette could get no closer than six the rest of the way as the Pirates hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Seton Hall was outrebounded for the first time this season, 37-34, but made up for it by holding Marquette to 32.8 percent shooting. The Pirates hit 48.0 percent from the floor, including 40.0 percent from beyond the arc.
The Hall next travels to Syracuse for a Tuesday night game at 7:00 p.m.
