SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team dropped its third straight game on Saturday, falling at home to Providence, 59-51. The Pirates (13-6, 2-5) rallied from 16 points down to tie the game late before the Friars (8-11, 2-4) escaped.
Junior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) and senior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) led the Hall with 15 points each. Senior Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.) added seven points and 13 rebounds. Emily Cournoyer scored a game-high 17 points for the Friars.
Providence took an early 8-4 lead after a backdoor layup by Chelsea Marandola with 15:24 left. Mi-Khida Hankins capped a 10-2 run for the Friars with a baseline jumper, making it 14-6 three minutes later.
A 3-pointer by sophomore Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) brought the Hall to within 16-10 with 10:54 on the clock, but Providence ran off the next nine to take a 15-point lead. Emery finally broke a scoreless drought of over five minutes for the Pirates with a free throw with 5:30 left that made it 25-11. The Friars took a 31-19 lead into halftime.
Seton Hall shot just 17.2 percent in the first half, while Providence connected on 50.0 percent of its attempts.
After nearly three scoreless minutes, Hankins converted a 3-point play at the 17:12 mark to push the lead back to 15 for the Friars. The Pirates finally began to heat up, getting to within nine on a layup by Rhodin. Moments later, freshman Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) knocked down a 3-pointer with 12:36 left, making it 39-33.
A steal and layup from Rhodin cut the deficit to four with 11:23 to go. She later tied the game at 41 with a deep 3-pointer from the corner before Emily Cournoyer put Providence back in front with a turnaround in the lane at the 8:02 mark.
A fastbreak jumper from Rhodin evened the game once again at 45. Hankins hit a pair of free throws with 5:12 to go as the Friars moved back out to a 48-45 lead, but Rhodin immediately answered with a 17-footer to make it a one-point game. Providence again managed to find some breathing room, taking a 54-49 advantage after two free throws from Cournoyer with 3:07 on the clock.
Shantee Darrian sank a free throw with 52.8 seconds left for a 55-49 lead, and the Pirates were forced to foul after coming up empty on their end. Trinity Hull knocked down a pair with 37.6 seconds left, stretching the lead to eight.
Rhodin buried a 16-footer 10 seconds later to make it 57-51 before Hull hit 1-of-2 at the stripe for the Friars. Another empty Pirates’ possession iced the game for Providence.
The Hall finished the day at 31.1 percent from the floor, while Providence hit 44.7 percent. The Friars blocked 12 shots, including eight by Cournoyer.
The Hall plays its final non-conference game of the year on Monday at Pennsylvania, with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m.
