KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) and sophomore Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) scored 15 points each, but it was not enough as the Seton Hall women's basketball team lost at Rhode Island on Tuesday, 52-50.
The Pirates (3-2) jumped out to a lead quickly, using a three-pointer from Williams and a three-point play by Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) to grab a 10-4 edge at the 16:43 mark. Another score by Williams and a bucket on the inside from Green pushed the lead to 15-6 with 13:40 on the clock.
The Rams (1-3) got to within two on a pair of occasions before taking the lead at 22-21 on the second triple of the half from Ashley Rivera. She drained another deep three to make it a four-point lead with 4:05 left before halftime. Rhode Island's run reached 16-4 to close the opening period, resulting in a 33-25 advantage at the break.
Emery hit from beyond the arc to bring the Hall to within 35-32 at the 15:15 mark. Williams followed a put back basket with a deep three-pointer to give the Pirates a two-point lead, and sophomore Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) capped a 16-4 run with a short jumper that made it 41-37 with 10:15 remaining.
The Rams ran off the next eight points, sparked by a pair of baskets by Andrea Buck, to regain a 45-41 lead. Rivera buried consecutive three-pointers to make it a 14-0 run, and Rhode Island led 51-41 with 4:14 remaining.
Emery ended the drought of six minutes and 36 seconds for the Pirates with a lay up to cut it to eight with 3:39 on the clock. Green followed with a three-point play on the Hall's next possession, making it 51-46, and senior Ashley Booker (San Diego, Calif.) later stole a sidelines inbounds pass and went in for a fast break lay in to cut it to three with 1:13 to go.
After stopping the Rams, Green buried an eight-footer for the Pirates, making it 51-50 with 48 seconds remaining. The Hall forced a turnover with 16 seconds left, but lost the ball on the way up court, giving it back to the Rams. Rivera hit one of two free throws after being fouled with 3.8 seconds left, and Booker's halfcourt heave at the buzzer was off the mark.
The Pirates shot just 30.5 percent on the night, while the Rams connected at a 45.1 percent clip. Rhode Island finished with a 37-35 edge on the glass.
Seton Hall is back in action on Friday against Georgia Tech in the opening round of the LIU Turkey Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
