RALEIGH, N.C. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Monday night, as North Carolina State claimed a 68-57 win at Reynolds Coliseum. Senior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) led the Pirates (8-5) with a season-high 19 points.
Bonae Holston paced the Wolfpack (8-5) with 20 points. Seton Hall sophomore Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 15 to go along with 10 rebounds.
Emery scored the game's first two baskets on fast break layups as the Pirates grabbed a 4-0 lead at the 17:18 mark. N.C. State responded with a 7-2 run, capped by a three-point play from Holston, to take its first lead of the game, but the Hall scored eight of the next nine points to reclaim the lead, 14-8, with 12:01 to go.
The Wolfpack ran off the next dozen points, with Holston scoring consecutive field goals for a 20-14 edge at the 7:36 mark. The run reached 18-0 after a pair of Amber White free throws before Emery snapped a scoreless drought of six minutes and 32 seconds for the Pirates with a layup that made it a 26-16 game.
Down 30-18, the Hall made a charge in the final four minutes of the first half. Green sank a pair of free throws, followed by a bucket from Emery and a three-pointer for junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) that cut it to 30-25. Green and Emery hit again to make it an 11-0 run, drawing the Pirates to within one with 56 seconds left, and they would go into the break trailing 34-31.
After falling behind by seven, Emery led the Hall back with a three-point play and a fadeaway on the block that made it 40-38 with 15:22 remaining. It would remain a tight affair, with State eventually going back up by five on a Holston bucket seven minutes later. Brittany Strachan dropped in a three-pointer for the Wolfpack to extend it to 55-47, and Nikita Gartrell scored in transition with 5:08 left to make it a 10-point game and force a Seton Hall timeout.
Green snapped a field goal drought of eight minutes and three second for the Pirates with a layup at the 1:55 mark, but State still led, 61-52. The Hall would get no closer, however, as the Wolfpack hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.
N.C. State shot 44.3 percent for the game while limiting the Pirates to 36.5 percent accuracy. The Hall did manage a 41-39 edge on the glass.
The Pirates are back in action on Jan. 2 when they open BIG EAST play against #1 Connecticut at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
