SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall women’s basketball team suffered a 54-51 loss to Villanova on Saturday at Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates (15-8, 3-7) were led by 14 points from junior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.).
Freshman Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) added 11 points and six rebounds for the Hall. Laura Kurz paced the Wildcats (15-8, 7-2) with 18 points and nine boards.
Villanova jumped out to an 8-5 lead at the 15:40 mark after two free throws from Kurz. Lisa Karcic dropped in a 3-pointer two minutes later to make it 13-9, and she hit again with 12:30 left as the Wildcats grabbed a 19-11 advantage.
Senior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) buried a 3-pointer as the Hall moved to within three, but Maria Getty answered with a triple for Villanova at the 9:35 mark. The Wildcats maintained a comfortable spread before Emery cut the lead to 30-27 with a pair of free throws with less than three minutes to go, and her jumper just before intermission made it 30-29 at the break.
A layup from Kurz gave Villanova a 37-32 edge three minutes into the second half. Freshman Shanai Heber (Paterson, N.J.) hit a runner to bring the Pirates to within one at the 14:25 mark, and her floater five minutes later gave the Hall a 40-39 lead.
Heather Scanlon put the Wildcats back in front with a 3-pointer at the 8:55 mark that made it 42-40. Green drew the Pirates even at 44 with a jumper from the free throw line as the game approached the six minute mark, and her layup with 3:20 to go made it 46-44.
Kurz gave Villanova a 47-46 lead with a 3-point play at the 1:06 mark. After the Pirates came up empty, Siobhan O’Connor hit a pair of free throws with 32.9 seconds left to push the lead to three. Sophomore Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) sank two from the stripe with 15.8 seconds to go, making it 49-48, before O’Connor answered with a pair for Villanova.
Williams was called for traveling with 8.1 seconds left, and O’Connor iced the game with two more free throws for the Wildcats.
Seton Hall hit just 33.3 percent from the floor, while Villanova finished at 41.9 percent. The Pirates claimed a 31-28 edge on the glass.
The Hall is back in action on Wednesday at DePaul, with tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m.
