QUEENS, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team remained winless in conference play after falling at St. John's on Tuesday night, 60-40.
The Pirates (8-9, 0-4) were led by junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.), who scored 12 points, all in the second half. Da'Shena Stevens paced the Red Storm (14-3, 2-2) with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
It was a slow offensive start for both squads, but the Hall took a 6-4 lead with 15:15 left on a pair free throws by senior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.). The Red Storm heated up over the next minute, with Kelly McManmon's three-pointer sparking a quick 7-0 run resulting in an 11-6 edge.
With the Hall trailing 18-10, freshman Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) put home a fast break layup to cut it to six with 8:22 on the clock. Sophomore Shanai Heber (Paterson, N.J.) banked in a left-handed leaner from the block at the 4:54 mark as the Pirates again got to within a half dozen at 22-16, but it would be their last basket of the half. St. John's managed only two more baskets itself, the final coming on Sky Lindsay's 15-footer with 30 seconds left that made it 27-16 at the break.
Seton Hall shot just 25.9 percent in the opening stanza and committed 13 turnovers. The Red Storm was held to 34.4 percent from the floor.
Green hit a free throw and later scored on the inside as the Pirates cut the deficit to eight less than a minute into the second half. But the Red Storm regrouped once again, ripping off nine straight before Williams dropped in a three for the Hall that made it 36-22.
After Williams later hit a short pull-up in the lane to make it a 15-point game, St. John's went on an 8-0 spurt spanning one minute and 22 seconds to take a 48-25 lead with 8:11 remaining. The Pirates could get no closer than 16 the rest of the way as the Red Storm evened its BIG EAST record.
Green finished with eight points and seven boards for the Hall, which finished the game at 30.0 percent from the field. The Red Storm ended the night with a 42-40 edge on the glass and scored 22 points off 27 turnovers.
The Pirates are back in action on Jan. 16 at Providence, with a start time of 2:00 p.m.
