PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team suffered its sixth straight defeat on Saturday, falling at Providence, 75-61. Sophomore Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) posted career-highs in the loss for the Pirates (8-10, 0-5) with 24 points and 19 rebounds.
Chelsea Marandola led the Friars (11-6, 2-2) with 19 points. Seton Hall senior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) netted a season-high 22.
After the Hall jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind four early points from Green, the Friars responded with three-pointers by Brittany Dorsey and Marandola to take their first lead of the day. The Pirates quickly moved back in front when a short jumper by Emery and a pair of free throws by Green made it a 10-8 game with 13:41 on the clock.
Marandola completed a four-point play to cap an 8-0 Providence run that made it 16-10 at the 10:27 mark. Junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) keyed a 7-2 spurt for the Hall with a deep three and two foul shots that made it a one-point game, and the Pirates later evened the score at 20 on a fast break layup by senior Ashley Booker (San Diego, Calif.).
The Friars regained control, closing the first half on an impressive run. Providence first attacked from the outside, with Trinity Hull, Chandler McCabe and Marandola all nailing three-pointers to push the spread into double figures. Hull later scored and was fouled on a transition opportunity, and the free throw made it a 40-25 lead that the Friars carried into halftime.
Green muscled in a tough score on the right block to get the Hall to within 13 with 16:42 remaining. But Providence steadied itself, working the lead up to 18 on a three-point play by Symone Roberts that made it 53-35 four minutes later.
Freshman Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) dropped in a three from the left wing that brought the Hall to within 57-45, but the Friars again refused to give up momentum. Dorsey answered with a triple on the ensuing possession, and Marandola took a defensive rebound the length of the court before dishing to Hull for an easy layup and a 62-45 advantage as the clock moved under eight minutes. Despite Green's continued efforts under the basket, the Hall could get no closer than 14 the rest of the way.
Providence shot 47.6 percent on the day, including a sparkling 46.7 percent from three-point territory. Seton Hall was limited to 33.3 percent overall. Williams also reached double figures for the Pirates with 10 points, while freshman Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) grabbed a career-best eight boards.
The Pirates return home on Jan. 19 when they host DePaul at 7:00 p.m.
