SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team dropped its eighth straight game and remains winless in the BIG EAST after falling to Cincinnati on Saturday, 64-47. The Pirates (8-12, 0-7) were led by junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) and sophomore Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) with 14 points each.
Michelle Jones controlled the middle on her way to 21 points and nine rebounds for the Bearcats (9-9, 2-4). Kahla Roudebush scored 16, including three three-pointers.
Four early points from Green helped the Hall to a quick 6-2 lead three minutes into the contest. Jones gave the Bearcats their first lead of the game with a three-point play that made it 7-6, but another 6-2 spurt by the Pirates, capped by a layup from senior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.), put the lead back in their hands with 14:03 remaining.
Cincinnati was back in front when Roudebush buried a three at the 11:02 mark, and it took its biggest edge of the half on a Shareese Ulis jumper that made it 20-16. But the Bearcats would manage only one more bucket in the final eight minutes and 39 seconds as the Pirates worked their way back. Williams followed her own 16-footer with a three-pointer as the Hall grabbed a 24-20 lead with 1:28 on the clock. The lead stood at 26-22 at intermission.
Ulis buried a pull-up from 18 feet with 15:55 left as the Bearcats reclaimed the lead, 29-28. It was a six-point game after Carla Jacobs connected from beyond the arc, completing a 12-2 run out of the break for Cincinnati. Williams and senior Letitia Curry (Pennsauken, N.J.) stopped the bleeding with consecutive scores, but Jones followed with a three-point play for the Bearcats, making it 37-32 with 12:57 left.
Jones scored on the interior to extend the lead to 41-35 as the game approached the midway point of the second half. Roudebush later pushed it to nine with a step back three to beat the shot clock, and Jacobs made it 48-38 with a free throw at the 6:55 mark.
The Pirates were unable to get within single digits the rest of the way, due in part to 24.1 percent shooting in the second half. Cincinnati led by as many as 18 down the stretch.
For the game, the Bearcats shot at a 46.0 percent clip while limiting the Pirates to 28.3 percent. Cincinnati also owned the glass, finishing with a 45-35 advantage.
In the loss, Williams became the 19th player in program history to score 1,000 points. She stands at 1,010 and is in 18th place on the Seton Hall career list.
The Pirates travel to #16/11 West Virginia on Wednesday, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
