VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team used a late rally to snap its nine-game losing streak and defeat Villanova, 53-49, on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates (9-13, 1-8) picked up their first BIG EAST victory of the season, while the Wildcats (11-9, 0-7) are now the lone winless team in conference.
Sophomore Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) posted 20 points and 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the year. Junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) added 11, including a pair of three-pointers to set a new Seton Hall single-season record. Sarah Jones led Villanova with 15.
Williams hit the record-breaking three just over a minute into the game to give the Hall a 3-0 lead. The Pirates were red hot from the floor to start, eventually going up 12-5 after back-to-back buckets by Kandice Green with 13:56 to go. Later, freshman Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) sank her second three-pointer of the game, followed by another from Williams as the Hall remained in front, 18-13, with 11:59 remaining.
Both offenses slowed down considerably before the Wildcats eventually tied the game at 20 on a three from Sarah Jones at the 5:15 mark. Seton Hall would recover before the break, using scores from both Greens to go into halftime with a 25-21 lead.
Kyle Dougherty hit from beyond the arc as Villanova got to within 28-26 early in the second half, and Jones followed with another to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game with 15:10 on the clock. Maria Getty pushed it to 32-28 with a long triple from straight away before Kandice Green broke a scoreless drought of five minutes and 57 seconds with a pair of free throws for the Hall at the 12:35 mark.
The Pirates cut a six-point deficit to one when Terry Green knocked down her third three of the game with 10:23 to go, making it 36-35. Dougherty and Emily Suhey hit from deep for the Wildcats, but senior Ashley Booker (San Diego, Calif.) converted a three-point play to cut the Wildcats' lead to 42-40.
Suhey struck again from three-point land for Villanova, but Kandice Green answered with a short jumper to make it 45-42 with 6:20 remaining. The Wildcats went ice cold from the field, allowing the Pirates to get within one on a free throw from Williams with 2:37 to go. A minute later, she connected on a 14-footer to put the Hall back in front by one, but Jones answered with a driving score for a 47-46 Villanova advantage.
Williams answered with another jumper in the paint to put the Pirates ahead with 45 seconds left. After an empty Wildcats' possession, Kandice Green was fouled, and she hit the first before her miss on the second was rebounded by the Hall. Green was then fouled again, this time sinking both to give the Pirates a 51-47 lead with 23 seconds to play that proved insurmountable.
Terry Green was also in double figures with a career-high 11 points for the Hall. The Pirates hit 45.0 percent from the floor while limiting Villanova to 36.5 percent.
The Pirates return to action on Sunday, Feb. 7 when they host St. John's at 2:00 p.m.
