
Syracuse Handles Women's Basketball, 79-38

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team dropped its second straight BIG EAST game on Tuesday night, falling at home to Syracuse, 79-38. Senior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) led the way with for the Pirates (8-7, 0-2) with 19 points, including the first 15 of the game by the Hall.
Juanita Ward and Kayla Alexander paced the Orange (13-1, 1-1) with 18 points each.
Consecutive three-pointers and a put back from Emery gave Seton Hall an 8-4 lead three and a half minutes into the game. After Syracuse knotted the score at nine, Emery continued her offensive tear with a short jumper that gave her all 11 of the Pirates' point. The Orange took their first lead of the contest when Carmen Tyson-Thomas sank a deep three to make it 12-11 with 12:03 to go.
Emery hit a 14-footer to snap an 8-0 Syracuse run, but Ward answered with an acrobatic driving layup for a 19-13 edge with 9:17 remaining. Two free throws gave Emery the first 15 for the Hall before freshman Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) drained a three-pointer as the Pirates got to within 23-18.
Tyson-Thomas dropped in a 13-footer on a fast break as part of an Orange spurt that made it a 32-18 game with 5:02 to play. Tasha Harris followed with a three from the top of the key to make it a 12-0 run that the Pirates' finally snapped on a free throw by freshman Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) that cut it to 35-19. Syracuse ran off the next seven points before sophomore Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) hit two from the stripe for the Hall just before halftime that made it 42-21 at the break.
Erica Morrow stretched the Orange's lead to 25 with a long three-pointer that made it 52-27 at the 15:52 mark. Nicole Michael pushed it to a 30-point game with 8:23 remaining on a pair of free throws, and the Hall could not mount a rally down the stretch.
Seton Hall struggled from the field, hitting just 22.6 percent while allowing the Orange to sink 54.7 percent of its attempts. Syracuse finished with a 45-35 edge on the glass and forced 21 Pirates' turnovers.
The Pirates are back on the court this Sunday when they travel to Marquette for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
