PISCATAWAY, N.J. - With wintry weather keeping all but a smattering of fans away, Rutgers earned a 54-44 victory over the Seton Hall women's basketball team on Wednesday night. The Pirates (9-15, 1-10) have dropped two straight games.
The Scarlet Knights (14-10, 6-4) ran off the first nine points of the contest before Seton Hall finally got on the board with a layup from senior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) with 14:10 left. Chelsey Lee answered with a pair of field goals for Rutgers before Williams sank a pair of free throws two minutes later to make it 13-4.
The Hall put together an 11-2 run to get back in the game, starting with a three-pointer by junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) with 11:42 to go. Sophomore Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) drained a fallaway jumper four minutes later that cut the deficit to four, and senior Letitia Curry (Pennsauken, N.J.) capped the spurt with two free throws to make it 17-15 with 6:37 on the clock.
Brittany Ray snapped a drought of five-plus minutes with a three-pointer for the Scarlet Knights, and she followed with two more field goals within the minute to push the lead back to nine. April Sykes gave Rutgers a 26-15 lead with two from the free throw line before Hall freshman Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) nailed a three at the 1:13 mark that broke a five minute and 24 second scoreless spell. The Scarlet Knights took a 28-20 lead into halftime.
Both offenses got off to slow starts in the second half, but the Pirates eventually made it a 32-26 game with 13:48 to play when Kandice Green hit a tough jumper in the paint. Williams sliced it to four with a 16-footer from the baseline, but Lee scored twice in a 5-0 mini-run for Rutgers for a 37-28 lead.
The Hall was back to within seven on another Green bucket on the inside with 6:47 remaining. Ray responded with a shot from beyond the arc to give the Scarlet Knights some breathing room, and Lee made it 48-36 with a layup at the 3:39 mark. The Pirates could get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Emery, Green and Williams each scored nine points for the Pirates. Ray netted 19 for Rutgers.
Seton Hall returns home on Saturday to host USF at 2:00 p.m. for its annual Pink Zone game.
