MAYAGUEZ, P.R. - Incoming junior college transfer Tajay Ashmeade proved a key contributor as the Jamaica senior national women's basketball team took home the silver medal at the 2010 Centrobasket Championship.
Jamaica won its first four games in the tournament before falling to Puerto Rico in the gold medal game. Despite the loss, Ashmeade and company qualified directly for the 2011 FIBA-Americas Championship for Women, the final qualifier for the 2012 Olympics, and the Pan-American games.
Ashmeade turned in her best performance in a semifinal win over Trinidad & Tobago, totaling 12 points and six rebounds in 35 minutes. In earlier action against Mexico, she notched four points, seven rebounds and one block, and she posted five points, nine rebounds and a block in a win against the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Ashmeade, a 6'3" center and rising junior, comes from traditional powerhouse Trinity Valley Community College in Texas.
