SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - New Seton Hall head women's basketball coach Anne Donovan has announced the addition of junior college transfer Tajay Ashmeade to the program for the upcoming 2010-11 season. Ashmeade, a 6'3" center and rising junior, comes from traditional powerhouse Trinity Valley Community College in Texas.
"We are thrilled to have Tajay join the Seton Hall family," said Donovan. "Her size will help us greatly on defense and on the glass, as she possesses the physical tools to compete against the kind of post players we will face in the BIG EAST. Tajay also has great athleticism and the ability to run the floor, which will add an important dimension to our roster."
"I was very impressed with Tajay's desire to be around hard-working people who are committed to success," Donovan added. "I believe she will thrive at Seton Hall."
Born in Jamaica and raised in Bronx, N.Y., Ashmeade attended The Frederick Douglass Academy in Manhattan. Last season with Trinity Valley, she shot 50.0 percent from the floor while helping the Lady Cards to a 29-6 record and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association Women's National Basketball Tournament.
"The coaching staff really drew me to Seton Hall, especially Coach Donovan," said Ashmeade. "Her ability to develop post players will help me take my game to the next level."
This summer, Ashmeade will compete for the Jamaica senior national women's basketball team as it attempts to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London. Play will take place July 10-14 in the Centro Basket Tournament in Puerto Rico, with the top four teams advancing to the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship, the final qualifier for the Olympics. Among Ashmeade's teammates is veteran Simone Edwards, who was a member of Donovan's 2004 WNBA champion Seattle Storm squad.
