SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team made a late push but could not overcome Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, falling 64-58 at Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates (7-10, 0-4) will host RV/22 St. John's on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
Junior Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Hall with 10 points, five rebounds and a career-high tying five assists, while sophomore Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) scored nine. Taneisha Harrison led the Panthers (9-7, 1-2) with 19 points, followed by Jania Sims with 18.
An early three-pointer by Sims helped the Panthers out to an 8-2 lead before freshman Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) got the Hall back in it with a three of her own at the 15:07 mark. Pitt answered with a 7-0 run that was finally snapped when freshman Jazzmine Johnson (Glen Dale, Md.) sank three free throws with 11:06 left to make it 15-8. Later, Green got the Pirates to within 16-11 with a fadeaway jumper from the right block.
Green hit cutting freshman Elaine Swaby (Paterson, N.J.) for a layup that made it 16-13 with 6:27 left, forcing a Panthers' timeout. Pitt then ran off 10 straight points in less than three minutes before junior Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a free throw with 3:18 remaining for a 26-14 score. Sophomore Terry Green (Brentwood, N.Y.) buried a three with a minute to go, and Simmons followed with a pair from the stripe to cut the Panthers' lead to 26-19 at halftime.
Seton Hall forced nine Pittsburgh turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, helping to offset 4-of-28 shooting.
Senior Kashmere Joseph (London, England) scored down low to make it 32-26, and Johnson followed with a three-point play with 13:44 to go as the Hall cut it to three. Pittsburgh regrouped quickly, pushing out to a 40-32 lead when Ashlee Anderson connected from beyond the arc at the 11:44 mark. Harrison's lay-up less than a minute later made it a double-figure advantage once again for the Panthers.
Sims hit from deep to make it 47-34 with eight and a half minutes to play, and Shayla Scott followed with another as Pittsburgh began to pull away. After trailing by as many as 19 with 5:24 left, the Pirates closed the game on a 22-9 run but could never pull even.
Seton Hall shot 42.9 percent in the second half to finish the game at 28.6 percent overall. Pittsburgh dominated the glass with a 50-33 advantage. The Pirates forced 18 turnovers while giving the ball up only 10 times.
