TAMPA, Fla. - A late rally by the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell just short on Tuesday night as USF escaped with a 68-64 victory at the Sun Dome. The Pirates (7-13, 0-7) return home on Saturday to face #19 Georgetown at 2:00 p.m.
Junior Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Hall, her sixth double-double of the season and the 23rd of her career. Junior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) tied her career-high with 20 points, and sophomore Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) was also in double figures with 10.
Andrea Smith led all scorers with 22 points for the Bulls (10-11, 1-6), while Daleisha Carn added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Crew gave the Hall an early 7-5 lead with a three-pointer, but USF bounced back with a 12-2 run, highlighted by three buckets from Andrea Smith, for a 17-9 edge with 13:41 left. The Pirates steadied the ship, however, and a pull-up jumper by Crew cut it to 23-18 with 8:25 to play. Freshman Jazzmine Johnson (Glen Dale, Md.), who finished with seven points and a career-high eight rebounds, followed with a three to make it a two-point game.
A scoreless drought of 5:33 for the Hall coincided with 11 straight points by the Bulls, seven of which came from Smith, as the home team grabbed a 34-21 lead. USF carried a 36-24 advantage into halftime.
Smith shot 7-of-13 in the opening half on her way to 16 points. Crew and Green each had seven at the break for the Pirates, who shot just 22.6 percent to the Bulls' 51.6 percent.
The teams traded baskets for several minutes in the second half before Crew hit from deep to cut USF's lead to 44-34 at the 13:38 mark. Porche Grant answered with a three-point play for the Bulls, but a pair of free throws from Green and a jumper by Johnson brought the Hall to within 47-38. Green drove baseline for a score on the Pirates next possession to make it a seven-point game with 11:12 go.
After an 11-4 USF run made it 58-44, Green kicked started a 7-0 spurt for the Pirates with a three-point play to once again cut the deficit to seven. Jasmine Wynne scored underneath for the Bulls, but junior Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Morris made consecutive lay-ups for a 60-55 score with 3:41 on the clock.
Morris came off a screen to knock down a three-pointer that made it 63-58 at the 1:18 mark. The Pirates were still down five with half a minute left when a three-point attempt by Crew rimmed out, and the Bulls closed out the game at the free throw line.
The Pirates shot 50.0 percent in the second half to finish the night at 36.1 percent overall. USF hit at a 45.9 percent clip, with 48 of its 68 points coming in the paint. The Bulls outrebounded the Hall, 40-39.
