Freshman setter Chelsea Heier is tops in the conference posting 12.04 assists per set. Heier earned her second straight BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honor this past week. Juniors Danielle Carlson and Carol Henney rank as the top two performers in the conference in hitting percentage.
SHU VS. SU ALL-TIME: 7-22
LAST MEETING: Nov. 6, 2010
LOCATION: South Orange, N.J.
RESULT: W, 3-1
SCOUTING THE ORANGE
Syracuse announced this week that head coach Jing Pu has been relieved of his duties and that current assistant coach Kelly Morrisroe will serve as interim head coach. The Orange are 3-3 in conference matches and went 1-2 in a recent three-game BIG EAST homestand. Junior middle blocker Samantha Hinz anchors a stout Syracuse defense. She leads the BIG EAST and is ranked sixth in the nation in blocks per set with 1.55. The Orange have also held their opponents to a hitting percentage of .153, second best in the conference.
PIRATES OFF TO FAST BIG EAST START
The Pirates have registered a 4-2 record to this point in BIG EAST play. This marks the best conference start under Head coach Kris Zeiter. In addition, the Pirates have won 10 of their last 13 matches overall.
WROBEL AMONG SHU REJECTION LEADERS
Following last week's match at Rutgers, senior Krissy Wrobel has moved up to seventh on the all-time blocks list. She is currently 13 rejections away from moving up to sixth in the record books.
MATUSIAK CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Senior Meghan Matusiak moved up to fourth place on the all-time kill list after a win over Boston College on Sep. 15. The right-side hitter is just the eighth player in program history to record 1,000 career kills.
PIRATES TAME BEARCATS
With the Pirates sweep of Cincinnati on Oct. 7, they earned just their second win over the Bearcats in seven tries. It was the first win over Cincy in the Kris Zeiter era.
TRU-CALLING
After spending her first two seasons as a setter, junior Olivia Trudeau has quietly had a solid season for SHU playing exclusively in the back-row. Her 2.38 digs per set is third on the team, and she played a key role in the Pirates victory over Cincinnati on Oct. 7. Trudeau posted 10 digs in the third set, and led the team with 14 for the match.
MILESTONES AHEAD
Sophomore Alyssa Warren has over 900 digs in under two seasons at SHU. She is already ninth on the career list and should become just the eighth player in school history to record 1,000. Her 397 scoops this season is already the sixth highest single-season total and Warren is just one dig away from setting the sophomore record.
THE ELUSIVE TRIPLE DOUBLE
Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe posted the first ever triple-double in program history after recording 13 kills, 27 assists, and 10 digs in a win at USF on Oct. 3.
SHU CAGES PANTHERS
With its 3-1 win at Pittsburgh on Sep. 23, SHU claimed its first win against the Panthers since 2002 and first road win against their conference foe since 1998.
DIG IT
Libero Alyssas Warren is ranked 11th in the nation, averaging 5.51 digs per set. She is also third in the conference and tied for third in league only games at a 5.14 average.
WARREN RECEIVES HIGH HONOR
Sophomore Alyssa Warren became the first player in program history to be named BIG EAST Player of the Week after her record-breaking performance against Boston College on Sep. 16.
A RECORD-BREAKING PERFORMANCE
Sophomore Alyssa Warren broke a 21-year old single match record after recording 45 digs in a five-set win over Boston College on Sep. 16. Warren shattered the old mark of 41, previously set by Laura Romeika in 1990.
