WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team held off a pesky Army squad, 53-50, on Sunday afternoon. The Pirates (2-0) received another strong performance out of Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.), who had 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists with no turnovers.
The clubs traded buckets over the first 5:32 of the second frame until a pair of free-throws by Chizoba Ekedigwe (Laurel, Md.) gave the Pirates a 32-29 cushion. Still holding a three-point lead, SHU turned up the defensive pressure and held Army to just one field goal over a 6:13 span to extend the margin to 45-35 with 8:34 remaining.
After a trifecta from the right corner by Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) made it 53-44 with 3:00 remaining before Jen Hazlett almost single-handedly brought the Black Knights back. Hazlett drained a long three and completed a three-point play with 1:07 remaining to pull Army within three points.
The score remained that way until the final possession of the game. With seven seconds remaining, Elaine Swaby (Paterson, N.J.) stepped out and deflected a three-point attempt by Molly Yardley to preserve the victory.
A back-and-forth first half saw 11 lead changes and the Black Knights hold a slim, 25-24, lead into the break. SHU was able to get several buckets in transition to hold a five-point lead with 15:09 in the first half, but Army hit a pair of three-pointers to regain the lead, 12-11.
After Swaby hit a foul shot to briefly give the Hall the lead back, 19-18, Megan Doucette layup gave the Black Knights the lead for the final 5:20 of the period.
For the game, the Pirates limited the Black Knights to 31.6-percent shooting from the floor and had eight steals and seven blocks, four by senior Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.). The Pirates had just 12 turnovers in the game and for the second straight contest, SHU held their opponent to just one field goal off of miscues.
The Pirates will travel to Durham, N.H. to face New Hampshire on Wednesday, November 16, at 7:00 p.m.
