SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
The Golden Eagles (22-8, 12-2 BIG EAST) tied for second in the BIG EAST with Cincinnati, but due to tie-breakers, slid down to the third seed The previous meeting between Marquette and Seton Hall went five sets on Friday, Oct. 21 as the Golden Eagles responded from an 0-2 deficit. The 1-2 punch of Ciara Jones and Ashley Beyer has been the key to the offensive attack as they average 3.62 and 3.28 kills per set, respectively. Marquette's 12 BIG EAST victories are a program record, as is the second-place regular season finish.
PIRATES AGAINST THE REST OF THE FIELD
Seton Hall went 3-4 against the seven other teams competing in the tournament. The Pirates knocked off the #2-seeded Cincinnati, #7-seed Villanova, and #8-seeded Pittsburgh. SHU fell to Louisville in straight-sets, Marquette in five, and Notre Dame and Syracuse in four.
POSTSEASON HISTORY
SHU is 8-16 all-time in BIG EAST Championship. The Pirates last win came in 1994 against Providence.
MATUSIAK FINISHES IN STYLE
Meghan Matusiak was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Tuesday after putting SHU on her back in the final regular-season weekend. Matusiak posted a pair of 20-plus kill matches, including a career-best 27 in the postseason clinching win over UConn on Sunday, and two double-doubles.
A YEAR TO REMEMBER
After finishing the season 17-12 overall, the Pirates had their most succesful season since 2003 when they went 20-13. SHU's eight conference wins is a new program-best.
ONE GRAND FEAT
Sophomore Alyssa Warren recorded 15 digs at Notre Dame to become just the eighth player in program history to post 1,000 career scoops. Warren's season total of 547 digs is the most ever by a Seton Hall sophomore and stands is third highest single season total in school history, a mark previously set by Warren last year.
SECOND TO ONE
Outside hitter Meghan Matusiak continued her record setting senior season over the weekend, posting 25 total kills in matches at Notre Dame and DePaul. After recording 12 against the Fighting Irish, Matusiak's first kill against the Blue Demons vaulted her into sole possession of second place on the school's all-time kills list. Matusiak (1,392 kills) broke a tie with Jennifer Cheshire (‘94-'97) and sits behind only former teammate Sarah Osmun (‘07-'10) who sits in first with 1,553 kills.
DAILY DOUBLE
Shelbey Manthorpe added two more double-doubles in last week's action, pushing her streak to nine straight and season total to 15. Her efforts this season also include the first three triple-doubles in school history, the third highest total in the nation this year.
