SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team saw its three-game win-streak snapped by Michigan after a 51-47 defeat in a defensive battle on Sunday afternoon in Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates (3-1) were led by junior Alexandra Maseko (Harare, Zimbabwe), who poured in 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting while adding seven rebounds and three blocks.
Senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.), who was hampered by first half foul trouble, added nine points and five assists in a season-low 27 minutes.
Four straight points by Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) helped SHU take a 9-3 lead with 17:24 remaining in the first half. After Crew picked up her third foul of the game with 13:21 left, the Wolverines (4-0) took advantage and pulled within 12-9.
The Pirates responded with the next seven points to restore a comfortable, 18-9, cushion at the 8:21 mark of the first half. Junior Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) nailed a three from the left corner to make it a 10-point game shortly thereafter, but Michigan ripped off a 14-0 run over the final 5:21 of the half to take a 27-23 advantage into the locker room.
Maseko ended a nine minute scoring drought with a layup off a lob pass by Crew with 16:16 remaining in regulation. With the Wolverines still hanging on to a 30-27 lead, Maseko found open space in transition on consecutive trips down the floor and scored seven of SHU's next nine points to put the Pirates back on top, 36-34, at the 11:54 mark.
After trading buckets over the next four minutes, Crew put the Pirates back up, 43-42, with 6:42 to go. Michigan then scored six-straight from the charity stripe and held Seton Hall without a field goal until a Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) jumper with 48-45 with 1:23 to go.
Crew hit a pull-up shot from the foul line with 35 seconds remaining, and fouled on the ensuing possession. Michigan's Nya Jordan hit 1-of-2 from the line, giving the Pirates a chance to tie the score with 26 ticks on the clock.
Out of a timeout, Crew tried to find room in down the middle of the lane and threw up a runner with 12 seconds left that was blocked by Kate Thompson and deflected of an SHU player to give the Wolverines the ball back. Rachel Sheffer hit a pair of free-throws on the other end to put the game on ice.
The Pirates shot 34-percent from the field for the game, while limiting the Wolverines to 26.5-percent and 13.6-percent from three-point range. Michigan held a 42-34 advantage on the boards.
